Avus Performance has just whipped the cover off their pumped up Audi TT-RS, a 460 horsepower, matte black self-described "Ur-Quattro" for the new millennium. While it evoking the legendary Quattro Coupe might be a bit of marketing hyperbole, it similarly features a turbocharged inline-five and should perform spectacularly well. Heck, it could probably give the Sport Quattro rally cars a run for their money. We wouldn't dare compare it to the S1, though. Still, this version of the already-hot TT-RS is positively smoking.
Even in stock form, the turbo-five in the TT-RS puts put out a healthy 340 horses, enough to scoot it from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. By the time Avus finishes tinkering with it, however, their uprated TT-RS produces 460 hp and 472 lb/ft. Credit for the 30% horsepower boost comes via turbo and ECU tweaks, along with a new free-flow exhaust system with racing cats. So-equipped, the coupe's 0-60 time tumbles to just 3.8 seconds and top speed rises to 194 mph. Forget the Ur, that makes it about as quick as the R8 V10 5.2 FSI.
Thankfully, Avus' makeover isn't just confined to the engine bay. The tuner adds adjustable coilovers and a set of gloss black 20-inch Sportec Mono wheels wrapped in chunky 255/30-20 Hankook S1 Evo rubber. Said another way, they ought to do a whole lot more than just look pretty. Handling has been improved, yet so has the ride quality thanks to the adjustable suspension, say company officials. That added tweakability should allow one to maximize performance on track days without totally grenading everyday comfort.
The whole package minus the horsepower boost runs about 9,700 Euro (around $14,300). Avus asks that you contact them for specific pricing on the engine mods.

Press Release:
Audi TT-RS – The new "Ur-Quattro"
October 2009 - Latest creation from AVUS PERFORMANCE is something special for all Audi fans, especially
those who remember the Ur-Quattro with its blistering 5 cyl. turbo sound. The remake by Audi is
better known as the TT-RS which shares the engine and of course the sound.
With a stock power of 340bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque it is capable of doing the 0-60 in 4.6s.
AVUS PERFORMANCE takes it a step forward and improves the power and the look of the TT-RS.
Adjustable coilovers, gloss black 20" Sportec Mono wheels make the TT-RS look much more
aggressive. Thanks to the special setup which improves the factory suspension even further and
makes the TT run a lot smoother not only on country roads. Different setups for the race track are
avaiable either.
The matt black skin is something you will probably notice first when seeing the TT-RS. True to the
motto „Gloss is out, matt is IN" tuner AVUS PERFORMANCE changes it to matt black (other colors
avaiable on request). To give the TT-RS the final touch for the race track power has been increased significantly to a stunning 460bhp and more than 472 lb/ft of torque. 0-60 will be passed in about 3.8s and top speed increases to 194mph. Therefore AVUS PERFORMANCE modifies the turbo, ECU software and the exhaust system from turbo back with racing cats.
Attention, latest Sportec offer until 15th of December: Buy 4 wheels and pay only 3 (25% Discount)
- matt black „vinyl" – 1.999 Euro
- coilovers – 1.299 Euro
- modified ECU + exhaust system (460bhp / 472lb/ft) – price on request
- gloss black 20" wheels with 255/30/20 Hankook S1 Evo – 6.400 Euro

If they wanted to do matte black, I wish the would have done the wheels too. Other than that... this is pretty bomb.

Personally I like the contrast. Matt black wheels would be to much. Then again, Ive never really liked color-matched wheels much, except maybe on the lip, but not the centers.

if this had some classic Audi RS type wheels... OMG

30% increase with just exhaust and chip?! hell yes. This is one sweet blown 5! brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

Those kind of gains are fairly common with VW group turbo engines.
Personally, I don't think engines should come with odd numbers of cylinders. :D
Rob 9:35PM (10/08/2009)
My friend's Audi TT had to have the turbo replaced about 10K miles into the APR chip. Not sure if it was a defect or not, but who would blame Audi for not paying?
zamafir 9:54PM (10/08/2009)
fairly common? my 2.0T saw a 25% hp increase, when we're dealing with engines like this (well turbo, engine, etc) being pushed a lot harder, a 5% greater increase than what the 2.0T offers is pretty awesome.
@Rob - not sure what's up with you're friend's car, 40,000 trouble free chipped miles here.

odd cylinder engines are dumb, spark plugs come in pairs

Well... The United States will never get this car anyway, so does it matter? I like it though, it's definitely masculine.
Still, I prefer the idea of the RS5 -although with forced induction and not the uprated RS4 V8 FSI that we are getting next year. 450bhp V8 is great, but 450bhp and 500ft/lbs torque would be incredible. Audi needs to take advantage of their Quattro technology and offer all of the RS cars with massive torque. RWD luxury competitors would need to offer OEM slicks with their offerings to even come close to the traction superiority...

As long as Autoblog is not restricted to readers in the US, yes.

That's an awesome car right there. Gotta love matte black.

I agree- I don't care how gay the TT is, this thing is wicked!

I don't like the way it looks. Looks like a VW beetle on steroids. I think the stock one looks way better with just a drop, lip spoiler and different rims.

Nothing changed from stock other than the color of paint and different wheels. The RS model is a man's TT. My sister drives one of those TTs, and while a fun car - I see it as a girls car. The RS, I might consider if it came to the US, maybe. I have to disagree with the looks like a Beetle though - I don't see any similar body panels or exterior features that are close to on par. Then again, I really can't stand a Beetle and don't know how anyone could buy one of them. Hippies I guess?
James Shaw 10:00PM (10/08/2009)
don't know about you guys, but I think it needs a better/bigger (maybe carbon) brake kit for those rims to look better, but also to stop it from the alleged 194MPH

This is what bothers me about the TT "quattros". Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the TT-RS's engine mounted transversely? This would be different from every other car with the quattro badge, because they have their engines mounted longitudinally. And generally AWD cars with transeversely mounted engines only have part-time AWD. The only car with full time AWD that has a transversely mounted engine I can think of is the Evo. The TT-RS is great, although that sort of money puts it in Corvette territory, but is it really a Neu-Ur-Quattro, or a quattro at all, if it has a transversely mounted engine?

It's so those would-be owners can sleep better at night thinking they got a successor to the legendary Sports Quattro, when in fact they got a second gen of the bubbly shaped squashed beetle with traverse-mounted turbo 5. Woowhee.
My guess is the power increase will cost at least 25k if not 35k, in which case all this crap added together makes the car about the same price as a R8, but then people will still think it's just another T T (notice the resemblance to the stupid emoticon).
At that price might as well get any of the other similarly priced sports car that actually exudes class, like the Vantage V8 or a bit more, the Granturismo S.
