Spy Shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 caught playing in the rain

The car that authored the "four-door-coupe" terminology – and a great deal of Internet debate and dictionary definition checking – will introduce its second act toward the end of 2011. Unsurprisingly, the new model (which is expected to wear a 2011 designation), will look much like the current model. That's the way it goes with genre-defining things most of the time.Perhaps it is just our eyes, but in the spy shots it looks like the car's rump could be even more sleek, with the glasshouse landing even further toward the rear of the car. Also, the mirror mountings have changed – at least on this prototype – from the A-pillar notch to the doors. In line with Merc's current designs, they are now giant square flaps mounted on stalks.
Engines are expected to range from a 3.5-liter V6 with 292 horsepower to the top-o'-the-heap 6.2-liter V8 with 525 hp. Rumored to be tucked in there as well is a 299-hp hybrid.

you know what? I like those faux taillights... a lot. I think its the black trim with the jutting out LEDs that do it.

um, the rapide is not a competitor for this car. likely the rapide will still be like 60k more than the CLS 63. now a CLS65 Black may even things up a bit

I just hope they straighten out that curved window sill line.
The upper window arch and a window sill arch just gives the existing car the image of being cartoonishly bloated.
The weak concave tail panel doesn't help that bloated theme, nor do the headlights that look like a facelift gone too far for even Joan Rivers to appreciate.
The rounded, sleek roofline is fine. Doesn't make the car a coupe at all... but it is fine. If they make the rest of the car look normal, and not completely bloated, they'll be doing pretty well.
But just call it a sleek sedan, or something. A low arched roof does not a coupé make. Plus now they actually do have an "E-class" coupe with two side doors.

I don't care what they call it besides awesome. while it wasn't the mack-daddy CLS 63, I just had the chance to drive a CLS 320 CDI in Germany. What a great ride. No problem running at 160 kmh all day, saw 220 on short open stretches of autobahn. Still turned the equivilent of 28 mpg. And in a country full of 3-pointed stars, it still stood out. Can't complain!

I imagine they mar the car to help disguise the styling. I hope.
