Spy Shots: Possible Volkswagen BlueSport coupe mule spotted
When Volkswagen unveiled its BlueSport concept in Detroit last January, the big question on people's mind was "When can we buy one?" If the most recent spy shots from the Nurburgring are any indication, it could be soon. A development mule based on a three door Golf MK VI has been spotted circulating with what looks like a dislocated rear axle. It's not uncommon to see test mules using existing bodies with new hardware underneath, and it looks like this example has both a wider track and shorter wheelbase than the Golf, which could correspond to testing chassis bits for the BlueSport. It's not clear from this batch of photos whether this vehicle has the engine mounted up front or behind the front seats, and although there aren't any visible ducts or air intakes feeding an engine mounted amidships, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Only time will tell if we get this high mileage diesel powered sports car, or more predictably, one using VAG's delectable turbocharged 2.0-liter.

BlueTec may be just the thing America needs to realize the benefits of diesel technology. People are astonished when I tell them that VW has a Golf in Europe that gets 70+ imperial MPG.
(oh BTW Autoblog, the link in the first sentence doesn't work.)

Is that US gallons or British Imperial gallons?

lets stop the BS, america already realizes the advantage, look at the jetta TDI sales, more than the insight. America gets it. America's buying desiel. let's stop pretending it's the 90s.

The Tesla did it for the electric car so I can see where you are coming from saying the BlueSport could do it for diesel.
Aeromax 10:22AM (10/01/2009)
I don't think Tesla has done much for the electric car other than offer another attractive, yet expensive product. People say "hey that's cool!" but nobody can or will actually buy one yet.

Now only if the spy photog was able to snag a quick shot from a low angle for the rear wheels then we'd have a idea of what is going on.

Those shots are incredibly unexciting

That rear wheel looks awfully crooked!

I think it is mid-engined. It's the only reason I can think of for placing the muffler this far in the back of the car (visible on the picture showing the mule standing on the trailer).

Well, the rear axle could determine where the exhaust is placed. So it could still be an FR layout, but that's very unlikely. It's far more likely that it's MR.

Following the link, if you look at the underside of the white one, you see what *may* be an oil pan in front of the rear axle, but it's doubtful. The white one has a different wheel base and width. Even in the dark one, it still appears to have back seats with headrests.
It seems unlikely, but it sure is odd..

I thought VW specifically cancelled the BlueSport?? I really was looking forward to the BlueSport so I hope this report is true. I want a BlueSport to park next to my new CR-Z.
