Frankfurt 2009: 2010 Volvo C70 works best in San Diego

Why San Diego? That way you could maximize the amount of time your new C70 spends with its top down. More than three hundred days a year -- probably. We say this because we saw some leaked shots of Volvo's latest hardtop droptop a couple of weeks ago and it looked real nice with the roof stowed. Elegant even. But dude, is this Swede funny-looking with the top up. Viewed from the side, it's hard to tell which end is which. Only the arching, over-sized headlights lend a clue.
There are some good points, like those aforementioned headlamps. And we really dig the new grill. The mirrors, wheels and rear end treatment (check those LED lights) all pass the smell test, too. But what's up with those cheapo fog light surrounds? And you simply have to check out the thick rubber antennae to understand how awkwardly it's placed. And again, speaking of awkward, with the top up the C70's proportions are bizarre. We're talking Volkswagen Eos bizzare. Make of it what you will, but we're left with the impression that Volvo took a styling step backwards this time out.

I guess I'll have to see it in person to understand the awkwardness you're talking about, 'cause it looks quite nice in these photos.

Agreed, it looks good. Nothing like the awkward Eos. That antenna is odd though...

Agreed... for a convertible it looks quite nice with the top up. Doesn't have the Eos' awkward boot and the roof actually looks elegant, rather than the chunky norm.

umm are you serious? this was only a facelift - proportions werent changed. they look excellent with the top up - muscular even.

Sheesh, it doesn't look as bad as that. Certainly no more proportionally awkward than the Hyundai Tuscon featured in another post.

To each their own, but I don't see any of the awkwardness you mention. I agree the fog light surroundings looks cheap, but otherwise it's quite attractive.

Seriously, what awkwardness? It looks really good in the profile pics in my opinion, I am not a big fan of convertibles period, but I certainly see none of the supposed awkwardness you speak of.

Give Volvo some credit. This is the best looking, best proportioned hardtop convertible. It is the nature of the beast that top up is usually awkward at best. But this one actually looks ok. The Lexus, the Chrysler, the Pontiac G6 (puke!) all look awful, and most of them manage to carry on the bad looks even with the top down.

It actually looks less like a hardtop convertible than most of the ones currently on the market. I wouldn't say it looks great, but it'll do, if you're into that sort of thing.
The Eos and the BMW 3-series hardtop convertible look way worse.

Wow, I wouldn't say awkward at all either, its one of the best looking hardtops out there with the top up, could easily pass for a regular coupe.
I do COMPLETELY agree about those fog lights, I hope Volvo is listening and they change that soon, way too cheap for a luxury car.
