Spy Shots: Matte black Audi RS5 mule already looks the business
Extra flared fenders, furrowed-brow visage, and a sinister matte black paintjob, all accompanied by a V8 snarl. While it's a development prototype, the RS5 mule snapped during lucky-dog brake testing duty in the Alps strikes us as the perfect look for a topped-out Audi two-door built for high speed strafing. When a car is coated in matte black and backs it up with 400-plus horsepower of engine, it means business, and the RS5's stock in trade will be all-wheel drive enabled speed.
If Audi really wants its new coupe variant to be tough, we propose sending a mule or two out for torture at the hands of automotive journalists. Thanks for the tip, Julio!

So I guess that the games over trying to out power BMW and Mercedes. They made a car 4 years younger than the M6 with 100 less hp.
That's going backwards.
BTW, I want that GT3 RS with 450 NA hp matted to a manual 6 speed transmission. That's what heaven is. Give me that, a pass to Laguna Seca, sans the financial worry of wrecking the car and I would have a blast.

since many years Audi set the pace and BMW and Mercedes try to catch up...

The A5/S5/RS5 is the Coupe version of the A4... like the e92 is the 3series Coupe version of the e90 saloon and the e91 is the 3series wagoon
Audi has no direct M6 fighter because they have no super luxury large front engine Coupe... like BMW has no midengine supersportcar to counter the R8 and R8 V10

I always thought Audi's 5 is actually the 6's coupe counterpart...
But anyhow, the BMW 6 will get its competitor when the Audi 7 arrives... can't wait.

I doubt it's going to be a production color - test mules are often wrapped in camo or a flat paint color to make them less flashy, but that matte black crossed over onto consumers' vehicles over the past year or two. I used to see them everywhere in LA, but now I don't see any. Kind of like the spinner phenomenon on SUVs a few years back..

uh what? audi's history shows that its usually their hatchbacks or avants that don't make it here. a super fast version of a coupe that sells like hotcakes all across the US? of course we'll likely be a major market for this car.

Maybe this makes me crazy, but I *like* the matte black look. Not on all cars, obviously, but I feel like it really works well here.
Those wheels look nice, too. Fill the wells and they don't seem overly blingy.

Looks like the front and rear fenders (and possibly the hood) are covered with stretched plastic sheeting to conceal the revised fender fender design (notice (1) the bubbling in the sheeting near the C pillar and (2) the character line on the upper part of the door that abruptly ends at the leading and trailing edges of the door). Still hoping for ur-Quattro style boxed fender flairs, so maybe that's what's underneath the plastic.
