VIDEO: Gran Turismo 5 gets its damage rendering on
Gran Turismo 5 damage rendering - Click above to watch video after the jump
If you're a big fan of Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo series like we are, you were probably bouncing off the walls when you heard the news that GT5 would finally have damage rendering. We're pretty pumped too, but at the same time we have to ask, what took so long? After all, Forza has had damage rendering since version 2 (Forza 3 is on the way) and damage rendering can already be had on the PS3 in GRID.
With GT5 coming to a store near you at some point in time for this year's holiday season, creator Polyphony is ramping up its marketing blitz to keep our interest piqued. Follow the jump to view actual video proof that shows just how good damage rendering is on GT5. The 1:27 clip features a Subaru STI getting absolutely pummeled by walls and other drivers. We know the driving is bad on purpose in order to demonstrate how destructive GT5's damage rendering is, but we're hoping Kazunori Yamauchi isn't at the controls anyway. Hat tip to Jeremy!

Why does only 1 car get damaged when they collide?

Obvious answer, and one that no one is saying: The damage is for rally and race cars only.
The car in the first trailer that showed damage was a rally WRX.
Now we're looking again at a STI with decals. And the other car is a production model. As you said, notice the former gets damaged, while the latter doesn't.
Once we see damage on a production model I'll believe, but right now it seems awfully fishy.

Either Recoil's answer, or it's possible that they're not done damage modeling on all 1000 cars, and they simply chose one that did not have completed damage modeling.

It could just be that the sti computer model had been tagged to render damage, and the other car was a model un-tagged model from gt5 prologue.
But Recoil's suggestion makes a lot of sense as well. I hope all cars in that game get damage modeling, though.

there is some sort of system that avoids punishing good driving and only damages the idiot who was already bouncing off the walls
if it was just realistic damage then every race you would have 12 year olds driving the wrong way down the track looking for the most spectacular head on, wasting everyone's time

I think damage is, like Recoil says, only available to a few cars. It is the only case that makes sense now that I think about it.

From what I have read, only 170 vehicles which were specifically modeled for GT5 will have damage. Any vehicle ported from GT4 will not.

Out of the 1000+ cars, only about 100 or so have damage rendering, and it's purely cosmetic. It's PD's way of saying "this is what happens when we're not allowed to delay things for 10 years." Forza 3 will be infinitely better.

Couldn't they update the texture map so it looks all scraped up as well?

Agreed. Of course, it's still in development, but this "damage model" looks very simple--just a few body panels being displaced. I want to see dented, deformed body panels. For example, when the car sideswipes the concrete wall, shouldn't those panels be scraped and flattened out?

no doubt, scraches are a must. As good as the damage rendering is, they should also add buffeting to the broken parts. How many times do you see parts hanging off NOT move, they fly around and buffet/bounce in the wind that would make it much more real. the rear bumper in this example is perfect, the rear would be fluttering all over.
Like the hood, it should buffet a few times and then fly off.

FYI Chris, Forza has some new screen shots that I don't think have been featured on Autoblog yet.

No damage rendering was the only weakness in Prologue, and GT5 has that fixed so... I'm pretty sure that this will be the best driving game on the market.

Not if that damn hood doesn't fly off like the good lord intended!

Best driving game my butt. That damage didn't seem to slow the car down any at all.
Looks to me like this is just another arcade racer

This isn't really damage rendering... It's just bits falling off the car- no scrapes, no actual damage like that in DiRT or Forza 3, not to mention the fact that it looks like no car other than the one that's being driven by the player takes any damage.

No, you can see the door slide across the road.
