Monterey 2009: Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival at The Monterey Jet Center

If you're even a casual classic car fan, the middle of August means two things: The Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit and Monterey in California. The Monterey festivities culminate in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, but it is generally regarded to kick off on Wednesday night with Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival at The Monterey Jet Center. The Jet Center Party, as it's more informally known, brings together some of the most significant cars from all of the other events, along with many of the celebs and VIPs, lots of fabulous food and beverages, and an awesome assortment of classic warplanes and new jets for sale. It might sound like an odd mix, but it makes for a perfect start to our week in Monterey every year.
This year's party featured the usual assortment of jets, copters and planes, surrounding about 50 of the coolest vehicles around. Cars from the Blastolene Brothers (Piss'd Off Pete and the Indy Special), Reggie Jackson's classic muscle car collection, a sampling of iconic Porsche race cars that will be featured at Laguna Seca, Hennessey customs like the supercharged Camaros, a selection of headliners from the Bonhams auction, including the Auto Union and Bugatti, Spykers, the Zagato Bentley, Gemballa Mirage GT, James Glickenhaus' Dino Prototipo, and the new Porsche Panamera, Morgan Aero SuperSports and Lotus Evora, to name a few. Check out the gallery to get a glimpse of the goodness.

After viewing the gallery and seeing the incredible Porsche cars from the past and the not so past (Carerra GT), the Panamera (sp) looks so drab and uninspired. There is so much rich history and that was the best they could do?

Does anybody know what the car in #26? red mid-engined targa roof... looks like a nice kit car.
I thought I was up on what kit cars were out there... but I haven't seen this one before, and I can't make out what is on the card on the windshield.
I eventually want to build a car with a mid-mounted EG33 Subaru H6 with twin turbos, and rear-wheel drive.
That seems like a great combo with that red car. Anybody know what the name of it is?

I was about to ask the same thing... looks like an American muscle car version of the Dino.

Don't quote me on this, but it looks a lot like a targa version of the De Tomaso Vallelunga.
BoxerFanatic 11:32PM (8/13/2009)
Close, but nope.
The Vallelunga is an actual classic, very rare car, this is something modern, made in that classic idiom.
The Vallelunga has quarter windows, and a much flatter windscreen, and slanted back glass. three pieces of glass per side, plus front and rear.
This looks like a kit that combines a aspects of the Ferrari Dino (the hoop shaped B-pillar basket handle, with hollow rear window cavity above the engine cover) with coke-bottle fenders, a Lamborghini Miura like intake in the rocker panel, and a Lola T70-like compound curve windscreen, and a flat front
Plus it has lots of very square extraction vents at fairly wide intervals in the bodywork...
It looks very much like a non-specific homage kit to classic european mid-engined hardware, but nothing specific, and cues from several different cars.
But having no chrome or exposed hardware hinges, flush fit windshield and rubber-sealed headlight fairings... it is finished much more contemporarily than an actual classic car would be. That is fine with me... but that does mean that it is a fairly new, likely kit-based build, not a restored classic production car.
It is quite a handsome kit, and I would love to know what the name is, and the company that owns the molds, and what chassis it is built on...

Thanks for the info, RS.
Is there any other info around the web on this car? My google just pulled up a Type 48 Corsa Spyder from a company called Fiorano, which is a WWII-era torpedo-looking old-school race car.
The bodywork looks fantastic. any idea if there is any plan for wider production than just one car, in aluminum, or composite?

It'd be great if that gallery had some captions so we knew what we were looking at (in the non-obvious cases, at least).

The one with the ghetto chrome fenders? :-)
Yes, yes, I know the BMW predates Autozone...

I was at this event a few years ago (one of the jet sales guys looking for crumbs to fall from the pockets of the ultra-rich, don't miss that.)
Walked around all day with my tongue hanging out..rich babes in their summer clothes, the cars, and a few cool rich dudes among the horrid bastards that flock to these things.
The cars...oh my...Ferrari breadvan was on the block that year....out of nowhere a Veyron idled right into the middle of the event - hardly anyone knew what it was and I don't think it had been released yet. It was dark purple over graphite and looked amazing anyway.
On another note...how much are we all paying for the F-18 and crew to attend this event? I'd like that money back please. Hey - let's start chartering them! SF to NY in no time for $250,000. These rich bastards would pay it - yeah, it was like that.
