Toyota has a major hit on its hands in the form of the redesigned 2010 Prius. While that's surely great news for the brand (which is otherwise posting huge sales declines along with nearly every other automaker in the world) it's also reportedly exposing the availability of batteries as the biggest bottleneck to production. According to Takahiko Ijichi, Toyota senior managing director:
The new Prius model has been excessively popular, inconveniencing some of our customers, and the factories are working overtime at full capacity... Unfortunately, the batteries are not catching up with demand. Production of the batteries needs to be increased in order for our production to go up.
Panasonic EV Energy, the company that supplies nickel metal hydride batteries to Toyota for the Prius, can produce a maximum of 500,000 packs per year. Plans are in place to expand production capabilities, but that's not going to help eager Prius customers get their new hybrids any faster in the short term.

In related news, Ijichi once again confirmed that Toyota does indeed make money on the Prius, saying, "In terms of the Toyota lineup, I'd say it's probably in the midlevel of profit."

      Im sure toyota and honda don't really like selling these batteries as it cost a fortune if you add up all the extra components it take to make these hybrid cars and they are on the way to a castastrophy if sometime goverments decide to find a problem and do a recall campain for these cars. Actually each and every car manufacturers hates their cars because they left the car-guys folks and choose to sell petrol instead for an easy profit while suffocating the biosphere.

        A green car is one that produces LESS pollutants, period.

        The only issue of price, is how far out would it take for you to break even, in comparison to a diesel or gasoline equivalent. And to that point, most comparisons do not take the carbon footprint cost into account, by purchasing the difference in carbon credits on the Chicago Board.

        Wow man your posts are all gibberish. What are you trying to say? I honestly think your post is incoherent. Do you ever read them over before you post? I might recommend that.
        As for recalls or something like that you mentioned. All batteries are tested and certified for safety before they are sold and incorporated. Additionally, the Prius has been around in production form for 12 years now, it's track record has been very solid and respectable. Batteries will not get worse.
        Stop trying to spread misinformation and fear. Everyone sees it.

        @gorr I would have to disagree with both your posts. Plus ABG has reported many times through even direct quotes that the Prius and Camry do in fact make them money.
        Plus it now 2-3 years ago? no. And Hydrogen cars are just electric vehicles with a different type of range extender. Get over it. You show me a hydrogen car that I can buy now at something of a reasonable price, say below 250,000, and I'll crush my electric vehicle tomorrow. Until then hydrogen is a crap dream, it's going no where fast, and I'll keep wait for a hydrogen car just as I have been waiting 26 years for my jetpack, i.e. with not much hope.
        I agree with GeoffDr "Stop trying to spread misinformation and fear", and we don't want you here, because you never say anything clear.

        Gna gna gna. Toyota and honda just hate to the utmost selling battery-electric hybrid, they said it themself 2-3 years ago ( battery are the problem with battery car and we are ready for hydrogen) i know them, they hate everything about it. They hate paying fees on the technology in it like batteries and innadapted and complicated electrical components. They work a lot for this car, it cost a fortune to built and it make no profits. It cost more for less power then other technologies.

        A green car is a car that offer more for the same price or less , this is a normal evolution for any market, electronic products, motorcycles and many other things have done it. But these chaps have sold car technologies to big oil and goverments peoples and they think that it's better for them if we suffocate so we will be paying more for clean air. Actually as much as you pollute the air then as much as you make money, who is making big money, exxon and freinds.

      See this kids, is why technology sucks. Too many people want big batteries for overpriced cars. Brilliant.

      Now there are two solutions: create more strip mines to get nickle for batteries, or use, simpler, better modes of transportation than hybrid systems.

      Diesel, CNG, or just driving a motorcycle/very small car is a much better solution.

      @nick, it is not 3rd party :)))).
      It is actually in house technology, Toyota has JV with Panasonic, that Toyota owns 60% of. They have capacity of 700,000 units total right now and that will move to 1 million next year. Everyone else combined does not have similar capacity, exactly because it is in-house technology.

      This is all widely known.

      As to Gorr, feel sorry for you dude... Prius is one of the most reliable cars in the world and Toyota makes nice profits with it, hence Prius is now one of the top 10 most sold vehicles in the USA.

      This is why Nissan's strategy is to have *three* global in-house facilities pumping out batteries. You simply cannot count on a third party for something that crucial.
