According to Germany's Manager-Magazin, Mercedes-Benz has approached Renault about cooperating in the development of a new small car. Although conversations have just started, it seems that Smart could once again have a four-seat car in its lineup.

This would be the second attempt to develop such a model, after the original sales flop of the ForFour. That model, shown above, was c-odeveloped with Mitsubishi and shared the Colt's underpinnings. Rumors about such new model are not new, but the German publication points that the company's strategy relies on selling more subcompact premium cars. Developing the new A and B Class models can be pursued as an in-house development, but the family Smart would apparently require a partner.

I want this to be true that a new ForFour to be made, but by a joint with Renault and M-B? Hell no. That would just spell epic fail. It would be like a mini R-class with the ever fails of Renault. I'm in no way, shape, or form a Smart customer or ever will be, but a ForFour would be an excellent car for daily chores unlike the ForTwo, which is strictly commuting. You could even try to pack up the family to go somewhere. A ForFour would be more flexible and more practical.

We saw the four door in Europe and thought it ideal for almost every use but long road trips, when a rental would suffice. Evidently, the Europeans disagreed.

Leitplanke - MCC no longer exists. That was the original company set up by Daimler-Benz and Swatch back in the mid-1990's. DaimlerChrysler (as it became) bought out Swatch's stake after it pulled out of the venture and MCC was dissolved. It was then replaced by a new company known as Smart GmbH, but that was also dissolved and now Smart's operations are a mere cost centre of Mercedes-Benz.

The Smart Fortwo was really only good at big city driving because of its size. I dont see this car selling very well, especially since the Fortwo had some problems with pretty basic stuff.

The ForTwo is the city car that we get here in the states.

The ForFour was a Mitsubishi Colt (sorry, Dodge Colt) that had been beaten with a big plastic-clad ugly stick. (Note that the car in the picture has four doors, not two.) They don't make it anymore.
