As expected after this morning's initial leakage, BMW has released a staggering amount of images of the 2011 BMW X1 showing the brand's new soft-roader in every conceivable environment before it's officially revealed at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Along with the pics, BMW put out a brief statement (below the fold) confirming the X1's arrival in the U.S. sometime in 2011 and its plans to offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive (xDrive) versions, along with "a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices." BMW won't officially confirm what mils will make the trip across the Atlantic, but the automaker says the X1 will use its EfficientDynamics system and that one gasoline engine and three diesels will be available when the X1 launches in Europe this fall. Check out all 183 high-res images in the gallery below and expect official U.S. market information to be released closer to the X1's launch in the States.

PRESS RELEASE
THE BMW X1 CONFIRMED FOR UNITED STATES IN 2011
Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – July 1, 2009 ... It was confirmed today that the BMW X1 is planned to debut in the United States in calendar year 2011. The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations, as well as a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices. In light of rapidly evolving US market demands, fuel prices, and regulatory standards, elements of the X1's US launch plan, including engine and drivetrain configurations, will be forthcoming closer to the time of launch.

The BMW X1 will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines - one gasoline and three diesels - and will be available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. The X1 will set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment for efficiency, comfort, utility, and of course driving dynamics. Achieving up to 5.2 L/100km (45.2 miles per US gallon) on the European test cycle, the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X1 sDrive18d will provide remarkable fuel efficiency while still achieving a top speed of 200km/h (124mph). Each drivetrain choice for the X1 will showcase the latest results of BMW's EfficientDynamics engineering strategy, which is focused to reduce emissions and consumption while enhancing the performance expected of any BMW.

Don't you know Mercedes Benz has fair lineup of commercial vehicles, and pretty much a car in every single possible class of anything that drives on a road?

Here he comes to eat the X3's sales...if any.

That's what I don't get. Why not kill the X3 and just have this and the X5. The X3 is a low volume seller anyhow. Having all three is something MB passes off as logical. This sucks.
why not the LS2LS7? 12:26AM (7/02/2009)
Agreed. As little as I like this vehicle, it seems like a better vehicle than the X3. And there's very little need to offer both.
zamafir 3:40AM (7/02/2009)
yup, that's what i was trying to hint at earlier, it's pointless to have this and the x3 and the x5.
Berto 3:48AM (7/02/2009)
Yeah, I like this way better than the X3. Having both makes no sense to me... BMW seems to think it does.
And the chick is hot.

The X1 simply doesn't differ itself enough from the X3. It needs to have a major feature or be lacking one to have a SIGNIFICANT price difference between the it and the X3. But like the 1-series, it's only claim to fame is being a hundred or two hundred pounds lighter than the 3, oh and having a bigger face.

If BMW makes one with a turbo gasoline i6 (N54 or N55) I will seriously consider it as a commuter/city car.

oh...bmw done it again... I'm start to like this car...in white.
And hey... its the 3rd car in a row that looks exactly like the concept...

it wasn't really much of a concept...

that front is just hideous

Its actually just the lower half of the bumper that makes this car looks weird. I think its needs to be curved in.
AC0 7:44AM (7/02/2009)
The front is so flat, you could drive it into a wall and it wouldn't have any effect on the aesthetics.
Rick 9:30AM (7/02/2009)
The way the lights sag downward towards the outer ends coupled with the sloping inward lower skid plate makes the front end look 'sad' and 'pouty'. I prefer the more defined BMW front end.
Bring over the turbo diesel!!!!

I actually really like this design, but I think a few people might be turned off by how the front headlights are held down with Duct Tape.

Yeah I'm a bit surprised (and confused) that BMW decided to put "eyelids" on a production vehicle. This kinda thing was popular on the aftermarket like 5 years ago, very bizarre to see it on a 2011 stock vehicle.
I'm guessing they went two-tone just so it wouldn't scream 2003 import tuner magazine, but the grey duct tape look is pretty questionable.

I personally really like this car. Sue me.

Me too. I am seriously considering this as my next car when my G37 lease is up in a couple years.. It is everything I want in a car. I am sick of having a small 2-door and would like something easier egress/ingress. I want to have AWD and high clearance so that I can be able to take my car when I go snowboarding in the winters. However, I still want to have a small car so I won't have trouble fitting into spots in NYC where I live. This car seems to have everything I need, in a (relatively) attractive form factor to boot. It sure as hell looks better than that stupid looking X6.

I wouldn't mind one in stick with a little 4cyl diesel. Shame we probably won't get that option.
