BREAKING: Chevrolet Camaro outsells Ford Mustang in June

Despite having fewer model variations on the market, pent up demand for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro appears to have been enough to send the bad Bowtie past Ford's redone Mustang in June. Sales figures for the month are beginning to trickle in today, and General Motors says it shifted 9,320 Camaro units last month, as compared to the Blue Oval's 7,632 Mustangs.
Whether Chevrolet's victory will be sustainable over the long haul remains to be seen, but as The General has a backlog of 10,000 sold orders to fill (equating to less than a seven day supply), the streak is likely to continue for at least the next few months. Presently, GM offers just two main Camaro models, the V6 RS and the V8-powered SS, while the Ford Mustang has more bodystyles and trims than you can shake a stick at (arguably making the Camaro's achievement seemingly that much more impressive).
Sales of the third leg of 2009's pony car table, the Dodge Challenger, trail far behind, with just 1,369 units cleared last month.
As the industry heads into the dog days of summer, it looks like America's renewed pony car war is just heating up. Who will take the crown for the whole year? Sit tight, muscle fans.

And....it's new. So sales in the first year will be pretty high. This is pretty normal.

add to that the 4.0L in the Mustang is crap and not worth it and of course it would outsell it
I think the V6 camaro is killing the V6 Mustang and comes close to the Mustang GT
And if I was looking for a Mustang I'd definitely hold out for the upcoming 3.7L and 5.0L, i'm surprized they ssolde over 7k units with that V6 they have.

I think it has to do with the drivetrains. IMO the mustang is better looking, but I would still buy the camaro over the mustang because of the Higher HP engines, 6spd vs 5spd manual and IRS over solid rear. Once the new engines get between teh shock towers of the Mustang I would choose the Stang.

No, I'd rather wait for the 2011 Mustang with the new engines over the new Camaro. It just does absolutely nothing for me. Not a fan at all.

Because better technology and product development trump revitalizing a dead horse of many years?

Because they're not competing with 2009 Camaros still on lots at rock bottom prices.

Technology does not matter.
A little Audi or BMW will outperform both of them.

Not surprising as it's an all new car people have been waiting forever for. The Mustang will be back on top in a month or two after the inititial Camaro sales spurt and freshly cut Mullets start growing out.
Congrats to GM though for having a bright spot to offer.

Even though the Camaro is the clear winner here, the mustang will be back on top because every high school girl in america wants one (v-6). If GM can get all those high school girls to like the better looking Camaro then the mustang would be in trouble.
some1 6:39PM (7/01/2009)
yes because high skool girls comprise of the bulk of mustang sales...
the mustang is everyones car, thats why it sells well. Its appeal is not blocked by gender, class or age ... the camaro is popular, but it has never shared that kind of appeal at the same level.
so just because the mustang has that, dont be jealous... your attempt to make the mustang look stupid is rather pathetic...

You do realize you basically said the same thing as AMERICANcomeback, right some1?

"some1 - the mustang is everyones car, thats why it sells well. Its appeal is not blocked by gender, class or age ... the camaro is popular, but it has never shared that kind of appeal at the same level."
I beg to differ. If you go back to those crap ass Mustangs of the mid seventies to mid eighties, I bet you find that the Camaro and Firebird were far more popular. It wasn't until the Mustang 5.0 came out sometime in the eighties that the luster of the legend began to return.

Some1: I agree with Tuxchown, you obviously haven't been around the Camaro / Firebird before. Yes it has been off the market for quite some time, but these cars were VERY popular and sold HUGE numbers. Overall the Mustang has sold more units, but the Camaro have won quite a few rounds of the "Pony Car War".
Most notably, in the late 70s when Ford was offering the Pinto based 'Stang, GM opened an industrial sized can of WhoopA$$ on the 'Stang with the IROC-Z and Z28 Camaro, The Trans AM, and Formula Firebirds.
Note: The Camaro has long been the better car. Problem is, it was always somewhat reigned, in order to maintain the Corvette/s alpha dog status.
John P. 4:02PM (7/03/2009)
I agree with Mr Oak here. In the 70's the Camaro/Firebird Duo were definitely superior to the Mustang. Just Carroll Shelby famously called the original Mustang, "It's a secretary's car" no more than in the 1970's! hehe
The fact is the Mustang has a wider appeal than the Camaro. It pretty much always has except for a few times when it was particularly bad, or GM had a particularly good Camaro to offer.
psu48187 2:48PM (7/01/2009)
The Camaro better outsell the 'Stang. The pent up demand, and the common knowledge that Mustang powertrains will be upgraded next MY easily predicted this outcome.

That may be true (in my opinion) but remember the Challenger also outsold the Mustang several months ago (it was a newer car so its almost a given). We could see a change in the next few months. The Mustang will be back on top of the sales chart. (which is what I want. I prefer Camaros, but I dont want to see them in plagues like Mustangs.)
some1 2:48PM (7/01/2009)
Not to surprising considering its been in concept form for 100 years...
I think everyone (including Ford) figured this would happen at launch.
with the upcoming engine line for the new mustang, and all the "special" forms (please BOSS) i cant see this lasting long...
