Saturn Vue - Click above for high-res image gallery

Some 44,451 Saturn Vue models from the 2008 model year are being recalled, and yours might be a part of the action if it has body-color door handles. What's the deal? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the handles may stick, preventing the door from properly latching.

NHTSA says an unbelted occupant could tumble out of the vehicle as a result of a door that refuses to latch, though one has to figure that you're sort of asking for it by ignoring the safety gear. In any circumstance, doors that pop open aren't acceptable, so the 44,451 vehicles affected will be give chrome door handles by dealers at no charge to customers. The recall goes into full effect by August 18th, plenty of time to get a can of Nevr-Dull to keep those shiny handles looking their best.

My Dad has one of these VUE's his handles where replaced about 3 months ago. The reason for the Chrome Handles is that the original Body Color Handle supplier is Bankrupt (it took them 2 months to get him new handles).

It usually is only one door on a car, and the problem isn't hard to miss once it happens one.

        Earl Scheib begs to differ.

Also, I was referring to another poster who said it is easy to spot one that had the repair previous to the recall.

Well sure, paint anything you want. Just don't expect it to stay.
You can't paint a chromed handle. And the article above says HANDLES, not handle. Apparently they replace the set.
Oh, now that is just crazy cheap. Not only will they not pony up a few minutes in the paint booth, but they only replaced the one? I guess the recall is good for that reason alone, but it would still be nice if they could paint them.

ahh so the plastic chrome will fix anything!

Of course I can't get anything negative to post. I'll try again. They are only recalling because of the Penske deal. I have a 2003 Vue that the doors won't open at all.The rear differential went out, due to a defective seal, and I am on my 5th set of tires due to a defective rear axle. They did not figure out what was wrong until the warranty was, go figure! (They had a tsb on the differential, since 2003, but still couldn't figure it out). I also had a defective wheel bearing assembly @40,000 miles, a defective hoodlatch and a driver's mirror that cracked for no reason. Others have had a transmission that goes out every 40,000 miles. This is just the 2003 model. GM can go 6 feet under for all I care!

How about a set of Dubs to go with it?

AB: You make it sound like a silly recall in the title, but it's quite serious.
It doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would happen to often and honestly I think the average person would notice if their door is actually shut properly or not. This is just for gm to cover it's ass in case something happens.

"...so the 44,451 vehicles affected will be give chrome door handles by dealers"

What if you don't want chrome. I mean I totally understand what they are doing (giving everyone an "upgrade" to chrome, means they only have to supply one part), but still chrome door handles and NO other chrome anywhere will look a little funny. Well, chrome on a Vue would look funny anyways.
Agreed. I don't actually like chrome personally and I'd be a bit miffed if I had to give up my body color handles for chrome. I'd actually decline the change if I could.

On that same note, I'm frustrated that often a change to a higher trim level includes more chrome.
Well, all Vues have chrome, on the grille insert and header bar, side vents, and the side window surrounds. So chrome doorhandles won't look out-of-place.

        @ inline6:
Yea, I see that, so you bring up a good point.

        @montoym:
I am totally with you on that. I my Titan is an LE (I wanted leather and some of the other LE bits), but it has chrome door handles, mirrors, and bumpers (part of front and all of back). Personally I would rather it "look" like the base model that has body colored parts. Maybe I should hit up craigslist to trade lol.

Scary, people might get stuck in there saturn, good old GM quality.

Scary. People might try to learn the difference between they're and there.

Talk about a massive FAIL. I read it so much I can't even get it right anymore.

Sooner or later, most people will figure out that there are no more domestic cars and foreign cars. All cars are being built everywhere, by everybody to be sold under lots of other brand names. They are all built with parts from all over the world and the only people the manufacturers listen to are the stock holders, who are from all over the world. It's the sad but true facts.
That what you get when you buy junk. Saturn started out great and over the years fell victim to GM's greed.
Well, I don't know about you - but I PAID alot of money for my door handles to match the color of my car - and now they want to give me chrome handles - absolutely no way - it would spoil the aesthetics of the card completely!!

I spoke to Saturn Customer service yesterday and they were mandated by the government to SEND the notice out, end of story. We (Saturn drivers) are not mandated by the government to change the handles of our car otherwise we would have been served legal notices by the Government. I took my car in yesterday and they were going to give me chrome handles - I told them no way. Unless the Government serves me a personal notice to my home address, I am not changing the handles. I am not worried about falling out and I don't have children who sit in the back who "may" fall out.

Saturn also said the reason why they sent out Chrome handles because they were readily available in stock and Saturn had to act quickly to the Governments request. I am willing to change my handles out when Saturn decides to manufacture / send out handles which match the color of my car

Please, AB. At least try to make the headlines sound sort of accurate. The problem is extremely serious; the headline makes it sound extremely silly.
You're thinking of it in the wrong way. Think of it as vehicular assisted natural selection.
