The dynamic duo of Chris and Sam carry off Episode #133 of the Autoblog Podcast without a hitch. Though down a man, the pair didn't cheap out on topics or duration, it's the same podcast goodness. It kicks off with Hyundai's impressive showing in the recently released Initial Quality Survey results. From there, they hit Chrysler's RWD/FWD dilemma with its Sebring/Avenger replacement, the rumor that Mustangs could have had IRS for $100 per car, and reports of an Ecotec engine for the Buick LaCrosse. Keeping it on the Buick tip, spyshots of a Tri-Shield variant of the new 2010 Astra get mentioned. The nullification of all pre-bankruptcy liability claims against GM and Chrysler is next before talk settles briefly on Hyundai's 2010-on lineup and then turns to your questions. Ok,
In listening I must have missed something. In the fwd vs the rwd question, why was it automatically assumed the motor couldnt be longitudenally mounted, and run rwd like any other car.
It has to be extended range, or gas/diesel hybrid? Why?

its a mpg thing, any powertrain that has to send mechanical power the length of the vehicle is giving up maybe 10% compared to an equivalent fwd powertrain

Rob, do you hear any sponsorship for the podcast? We have no sponsor. Chris, Sam, and I do the podcast because we like to. We're trying to get it sponsored now, so that's what the survey is for, so we have data to present.

a rwd mainstream sedan would certainly differentiate itself
chrysler has to know that its brand image cannot support a direct competitor to the camry
diesel is not gonna happen, full hybrid setup costs less per vehicle and is more marketable
what DI turbo 4s does fiat bring to the table?

While I am opposed to sponsorship when it comes to subjective commentary in general, (think about what makes the top gear guys so popular/good - they don't have to worry about offending sponsors and losing revenue and therefore can be 100% honest about the cars they drive) I understand that you guys do this on your own time, and absolutely have the right to be compensated for it in some way. No one can argue with that.
That being said, all I will say is that I don't mind the ads on another particular podcast I listen to, where it is a quick blurb right before the start of the 'cast, and at the end. If I could make a suggestion (not that my opinion matters) limit any plugs during the cast. And an auto manufacturer sponsorship would be frowned upon in my eyes (only for reasons stated above). But you guys probably already know that. And again, who cares about my opinion.
Love the work you guys do, its a great way to pass time mowing the lawn or during the commute. I'll continue to listen either way, and if excessive sponsorship means I continue to get my podcast, then so be it. Its the price I have to pay, and I can live with that. Not meaning to hate on the 'cast, just my .02.

Was this thing recorded underwater? - Sponsorship is fine, Slate does it, though I could do without the people whoring it in the middle... But a seperate announcer would be fine
