While the age-old question of whether the fastest way 'round a race track is on two wheels or four isn't likely to get a definitive answer, on July 13th at the Ducs Fly South track day at New Jersey Motorsports Park we'll get another bit of evidence to consider.

Three Ferrari Challenge cars will take to the track driven by the staff from Universal Autosports, with each competing against the other to set the fastest lap. Immediately following that hot lap competition, a series of professional instructors and racers from Ducati will perform an identical contest piloting the Italian bikes.

You know where this is heading, right? Naturally, the Ferrari Challenge driver and Ducati rider with the fastest laps will go head-to-head in a winner-takes-all race. Wanna watch? No problem – you can even hit the track yourself on your own motorcycle. Click past the break for all the details.

CUPERTINO, CALIF (18 June 2009) – Ducati North America is excited to announce the first annual "Ducs Fly South" track day, which will be held July 13th at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Ducs Fly South is the Northeastern United States major Ducati event for the summer. The event will be a great opportunity to experience the thrill of the racetrack together with Ducati and the Penguin School; the nation's oldest motorcycle roadracing school. The Penguin School will have a special staff lined up for this event to provide both top level instruction and premium entertainment. The event is open to street riders of all levels and available to riders on any make of motorcycle.

Highlights of the event include:

Ducati Hypermotard Truck – This tractor trailer houses Ducati Hypermotards on which instruction and demo rides will be provided all day long. The truck will be the gathering place for product giveaways, a 'Best Bike' contest, test rides, and a suspension seminar. Cold Red Bull will be available throughout the day to keep riders energized.

Larry Pegram – The factory Ducati AMA Superbike rider will be on hand to celebrate his recent victory at Road America. Larry will be available for autographs and a special question and answer session about his Ducati 1098 R Superbikes.

Ferrari-Ducati Showdown – Boasting a showroom filled with pre-owned Italian sports cars such as Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; Universal Autosports is host to a staff highly experienced with exotic road and race cars. Universal Autosports is bringing three Ferrari Challenge cars that will be running on the track, which will compete against each other for the fastest lap. Immediately following the hot lap competition, professional Ducati instructors and racers will mirror this contest on Ducatis. The Challenge car driver and Ducati rider with the fastest laps will go head to head in a winner-takes-all race.

Track Experience:

This unique event combines the safe, comfortable environment of a track day with the opportunity for individual instruction for riders at every level. Two of the three riding groups will have passing restrictions, making for a comfortable place to ride for all participants.

There will be ample opportunity for instruction, and a rider may participate in as many of the classes as they like. Classes will be offered between the riding sessions covering topics like line selection, corner strategy, braking techniques, corner speed analysis, body position, bike setup and more.

The event will also offer individual instruction for riders; which combined with great food, a bike show, and a track photographer shooting all day makes for an event to remember.

I've seen a lambo vs ducati comparison using that ghosting or whatever its called where it appears both are on the track at the same time... The car just has better braking and corner entry speed. The bike came super close, both rider and driver were pushing the vehicles to their limits.

On the roads I like to ride, a car has no chance. The hills and minimal road width would likely result in major damage to a car trying to keep up to my bike. So, yes it depends on the road/track. Bikes are exponentially more fun though.

We must agree with Sepirioth. These are said to be Challenge cars so maybe the bikes should also be permitted track versions. However this appears to be a fun thing guys and would appear to be interesting. At least you guys over there get the opportunity to see those things. Here in the bush we miss it. Enjoy!!

If I remember correctly they put the Covette Z06 up against an R-1 on a track a few years ago and found that the Z06 bested the R-1, albeit barely.

5th Gear did that a while ago with a Lamborghini Supperlegera vs a Ducati 1098. This would still be quite the spectacle to witness though.

IIRC Top Gear did it with an Atom and an R6, too.

he is right about F1 vs MOTOGP, i dissagree on productin cars and bikes though, in that case the rule ia generaly cars faster in corners bikes faster coming out of them and straight aways . the four wheels help maintain stability in the corners and thus a car has to break less as well. So prod vehicles depends on the track 100%

So which ferrari is racing the 1098? Is it a road ferrari or a some crazy multi-million dollar F1 car?
The 1098 is a production road-bike, so it should be raced buy a production road-car.
