Scion prices xD Release Series 2.0 from $15,920

Scion has a habit of releasing an abundance of special edition models in its quirky little lineup, and the new xD Release Series 2.0 is the latest example. xD Release Series 1.0 included a $1,995 premium over the $14,550 tag on a base xD, but version 2.0 is a bit more affordable at $15,920.
For your hard-earned extra $1,270, you get a more tech-centric xD. The centerpiece of this special edition Scion is a touch screen Pioneer Audio Visual Navigation (AVN) system that features flash memory, voice recognition, and Bluetooth capability. The Pioneer nav system also has slots for USB devices and an SD card, as well as iPod connectivity. The ultra-trick AVN also includes rear view camera and satellite radio functionality. For the ultimate in tuning pleasure, the 5.8 inch LCD screen can also be customized in one of 32,000 colors.
Toyota only plans to build 1,600 examples of Release Series 2.0, and it a brace of cues to differentiate it from the standard Scion. For starters, all units will be painted in Electric Wasabi green exterior paint. The interior is differentiated with special edition seats with silver accent fabric. The interior also features four-in-one interior lights (whatever those are), and Series 2.0-branded door sills illuminated with white back lighting.
We kinda like the tech package on the xD Release Series 2.0, and the interior looks nicely differentiated. We do, however, have to take umbrage with the "special" wheel covers. It's 2009, how about some nice aluminum wheels? We know that a range of alloys are available as dealer-installed extras, but we can't help but think that it still looks odd as-is. Like their target audience (teenagers) are going to fall for that prank. Not gonna happen.

I'm a teen. Hate Scions with a passion and so does everyone I know.

I'm a teenager too. One of the reason I hate Toyota is because their method of attracting us teenagers is very pathetic. Toyota Corolla Rumion became the 2nd gen Scion xB with radically styling as to "implementing American taste"? Wow, really?? Do they even know that it has a reverse effect?
Toyota was more appealing back when they had the 86s, Supras, MR2s, and the GT-Fours. Ironically, they weren't trying to appeal to us. Then I became disappointed when they actually started trying (Toyota Project Genesis, Scion, etc...).. while killing all those appealing cars. How ironic.

Wow Scion is really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this update. Looks like its just a Pioneer F700bt or F90bt stereo in the dash. You can pick these up for $600 or less brand new. What happened to the days when RS models got nice upgrades like Alcantara interiors, new grills, etc.?

I dare say there are countless better ways to spend $16k on a car. Not the least of which would be the Kia Soul or Nissan Cube.

Not feeling this, I'll take my Honda Fit now.

Drive 'em back to back and I believe you'll change your story...
The xD is more fun to drive, handles better, a tiny bit faster, doesn't look like a microvan and has a much, much nicer interior.
BoneHeadOtto 8:58AM (6/12/2009)
Agreed with Rev
The fit interior looks good in pictures but it feels far cheaper in person. The scion has good pep. It does need to be lowered with the TRD springs to handle better. But the fit needs work too. The fit is just plain dangerous however with its notosiously bad honda brakes couples with its tiny tires. I think a Chevy Suburban can stop faster from 70 than the new fit. xD on the other hand has good brakes.
And if you need more space than the xD check out the xB and ignore the mileage difference. If you look at Edmunds true cost to own, the xB only costs $50 a year more to own than a Fit. The mileage makes little difference.

Wow...yet another Scion Release Series with plastic wheelcovers instead of styled wheels.
The last xB (6.0?) had the plastidiscs, too.
Underwhelming.

They do this so that the buyer can chose the alloy wheel, instead of proscribing it.
UltimoDragon 2:04PM (6/12/2009)
The audience this model is aimed at will probably opt for aftermarket wheels anyway. It's not that big a deal.

hideous shoemobile, only slightly less ugly than ever. Its funny how those morons at toyota (and honda with the element) targeted 20 something males, and all they get is 70 something females. So in touch.

I haven't seen any 70ish females in Scions, but have sure seen plenty 40-50 agers. This package is a cure for which there's no disease. And the green paint is so 1968.

Say what you will, haters, but for less than 16 large there are few options with fully integrated navs and unique paint colors in a new car. This is aimed at a few hundred people who want this package - obviously not the dozen haters above.
I don't want it either, but it's not bad.
