Autoline Daily provides first look at production Chevrolet Volt in black [w/VIDEO]

By now, we've all seen plenty of images of the production 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Up until this point, though, all of the shots that General Motors have let out have been of the car in a happy shade of silver. Not any more, as our friend John McElroy from Autoline Daily managed to score the world's first shots of what he says is the final production design of the Volt in stealthy black paint. The shady motif is broken up somewhat by a chrome accent that runs down each side of the car and flips back near the side-view mirrors and the large faux grille, which still bears a patterned appearance that mimics the look of a standard opening.
McElroy also got the chance to spend some time behind the wheel of GM's latest Cruze-based Volt mule, and he plans to add his initial thoughts to his Journal later today. Hit the jump to watch the video after the break.

Not bad in black, actually. Boring, yes, but not unpleasant and recognizable (but not too much so). Which I guess is what they're going for (mainstream appeal).
I wish they'd do something with the filled-in silver grill though.

That car looks awesome! I'd take that over a lot of current gen offerings

agreed, fix the grill, doesn't look bad. I wouldn't pay 40k for it, but it doesn't look bad.

Not feeling it.
Although the New GM is trying to position this as a premium product, with a $40,000 price tag, I would have a really hard time justifying it. Game changer status notwithstanding.

Mike, I'm a die hard Domestic hater, There isn't one domestic car I like, but I sure as hell like this Volt, I hope GM can make all there cars look so sleek and mean.

Auari, Just whats wrong with Domestics? I like them. All of the Asian cars are too boring to me and the only Euro cars worth a damn are the expensive high end ones.

As far as the looks go, it beats the bloody hell out of the Prius.

If we're talking just styling here, the Europeans have it by far. This extends beyond the car industry as well--somehow European design comes off a little more elegant and a little more refined (ignoring blips here--Multipla, anyone?). In contrast, Japanese cars tend to look more appliance-like, and American cars tend to look a little crude.
Back to the Volt, though. Personally, I believe it looks promising--if GM can bring it to market at their $40,000 sticker (which I think is completely reasonable for a first-generation product of this type), I'll be impressed. It's a good stepping stone to the full-on EV--gives people a taste of the zero-emission life while giving them that gasoline "safety blanket".

Not Boring at all, but i'd like to see a little more Civicishness in it.

Looks like the Mafia's Prius.

I'm glad it doesn't have much Civicness. Is there any "green" car that has a front end that looks as agressive as this car?

This is why Chevy will be just fine, thank you very much.

But who`s gonna buy it? Retarded out of work auto workers? Mr. and Ms. middle class who can`t afford the things they currently "own"? Rich Mr. Money who would rather by a Tesla S than a GM piece of trash?

Disagree. This is why GM will fail in the end.
GM has no business sense. Placing all their eggs in this $40,000 basket will not work.
Many, myself included, will never consider anything made by them at present. They are inferior, unreliable, and UGLY. Blech.
Secondly, many people will not be willing to spend $40K on what they consider to be "risky" new technology. I know so many people who are afraid of hybrids because of the batteries' cost.
GM and "hi-tech" are not, or at least have not been, happy bedfellows.
This will be a HUGE [fatal] fail for GM, no matter how good [or not] the technology and innovation is.
Lastly, it still looks like a Cobalt or Impala to me. Not a good thing!

"This is why chevy will be just fine" ahhh, have you read the papers or any current events lately. You actually think one vehicle is going to save this struggling brand, give me a break.

Largely sexy for what it is - the back end isn't great, but it is functional.

The non-grill grill needs to go. This car isn't going to save GM.
