VW Up! concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery

According to a report on Auto Express, Volkswagen plans to debut a new eco-friendly concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September that could potentially rival the Chevy Volt-based Opel Ampera in Europe. Unlike the automaker's previous green concepts like the hybrid Golf TwinDrive and diesel-powered BlueSport Roadster, the new and as-yet unnamed concept will be fully electric.

Beyond that, details are scarce. There's some speculation that the new EV may be based on the Volkswagen's New Small Family architecture that underpins the tiny Up! city car concept first seen way back in 2007, but that's not yet confirmed. In any case, the Frankfurt-bound electric vehicle is likely to use lithium ion batteries supplied by Toshiba.

Looks familiar. Haven't we seen this before?

If it's going against the Volt, it'll need 4 doors. I look forward to any EV concepts as long as they are close to hitting the road in reality.

Is Frankfurt shaping up to be the best auto show ever, or what?

It typically is, it helps it switches off each year, giving auto makers more of an incentive to bring awesome bits.

I want to buy that car, ever since I saw the first pictures of it some years ago.

Would be a perfect second car...

It's awesome in person, really it is. Inside the packaging is so compact yet renewable (in concept form) and all the little details are that which you would expect in a more expensive car. The Apple inspired coverflow dash and nav (functional) was also a lot of fun and quite impressive. I understand it'll change for production but it's sure unique like the old beetle. I'm looking forward to this concept!

I'll be interested in it when it's on a showroom floor, and at NO point before then.

      Do the right thing, VW.
