Shaghai 2009: Buick Regal 2.0T has us humming "Wish You Were Here"

Admittedly, Pink Floyd and Buick traditionally go together like asparagus and ice cream, but that hasn't stopped our inner-monologues from playing "Wish You Were Here" after seeing Buick's new Regal 2.0T.
According to our compatriots over at Autoblog Simplified Chinese, the Opel Insignia-based model features the company's 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine, tuned to give 162 kW of power (217 horsepower) and 350 Nm of torque (258 pound-feet). That's sufficient gusto to get the General Motors sedan to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds and on to a healthy top whack of 232 kmh (144 mph).
Fuel economy? Well, that's a good question. Our counterparts in China cryptically point to a figure of 7.2-liters per 90 km (the standard metric is per 100 km), so we'll have to get back to you on that.
The new Regal 2.0T is expected to join Buick's Chinese lineup in the second half of 2009.

considering audi's managing that with a car the same size and powerplant of the same specs, i'd say it's reasonable to say yes. this car/engine would be a great move. If you can’t beat ‘em, join em.

Lets see if I can do maths...7.2 litres per 90 km (/90*100)= 8 litres per 100km, and that, according to onlineconversion.com is equal to roughly 29.4 miles per gallong (US). Not bad, but not extraordinary either.

Even if its 8-9 litres / per 100km avg, thats still pretty damn good for almost 260 lb/f torque in a relatively small car.

My aunt is in Beijing for 2 weeks and she uploaded some pictures of downtown and...Buicks EVERYWHERE. I somestimes wonder if Buick isin't more important going forward to GM than even Chevy is lol

that's 7.2 liters per 100 km @ 90km/h constant speed. This is the way in which the official gas milage is measured in China

...and pretty much everywhere else outside the US. The UK converts the speed to mpg, and the fuel economy to mpg -- and that's the big gallons, not "fun size" US gallons.
For our US readers, 7.2 l/100km is 32.986111111111111111 mpg. And remember, that's at 56.25 mph.

Which in China, never happens...
BTW, Shanghai but not shaghai.

It obviously is. Who wrote this article :s
Europe has the same measurements:
consumption at 90 kph/100km
Swede 3:20PM (4/20/2009)
The european driving cycle consists of four ECE-15 cycles and one EUDC cycle, the average/max speed of the first four tests being 18.7/50 kph. The EUDC cycle is run at an average/max speed of 62.6/120 kph.
Swede 3:28PM (4/20/2009)
ECE15 is 780 seconds long and covers 4052 meters, EUDC is 400 seconds and covers 6955 meters.

Because in china, quality is not that important anymore. C-NCAP will help you for all.
Taglane 3:03PM (4/20/2009)
The car is coming here in about a year or two. three the latest.

"Because in china, quality is not that important anymore"
yes, does the whole world know we american build inner wall of a home with some kind of dry wall a three year old can punch a hole on the wall, that our homes are so solid built can't be tore to pieces after a wind? we american more care about quality either a car or a home than size? LOL.
montoym 3:22PM (4/20/2009)
a year or two?
It's the 2010 LaCrosse. It will be here by the Fall.
We won't be seeing the 2.0T version, but the 3.0L DI V6 will still deliver good fuel economy.
Plus, when the other versions of this car come out(Next-gen Malibu etc.) we will be sure to see other 4cyl options, though still possibly not the 2.0T.
Protzenegger 3:44PM (4/20/2009)
@ montoym:
That is clearly not the 2010 LaCrosse. This is the LaCrosse:

Well, your hot-linked photo doesn't show up so I'm unsure what you are getting at.
However, the Chinese Regal is absolutely a similar car to the 2010 LaCrosse. They(like the Opel Insignia) are built on the Epsilon II platform which will also be used on the next-gen Malibu. They are as similar as the Malibu, G6, and Aura(amongst others) which were all built on the previous Epsilon platform.

Please explain to me what makes the Chinese one so dramatically different from the US version.
