Click above to view the video after the jump

Ford's been building up to April 17, 2009 for several months now. In these dark days for the auto industry, there isn't a lot worth celebrating so it's understandable that the 45th anniversary of the introduction of the Mustang is drawing some attention. Over the past 45 years, numerous contenders have rolled up to the lights for a chance to try and snatch the crown from the original pony-car, but only the Mustang has remained standing throughout. The latest intender to the throne comes from Hyundai in the form of the Genesis Coupe. As with so many species in the animal kingdom, the battle for the alpha position is preceded by an elaborate dance. Check out the Genesis coupe's birthday tribute the current leader after the jump.

Not only is this some sort of fan/student video, but this student does not show much promise as far as preproduction, editing, cinematography, lighting, scoring or anything goes.

My best friend is one of the most sought after commercial editors in the biz, he could throw something together a thousand times nicer in his sleep, operating his Mac via buttcheek. I'm gonna have to send him this just to hear him go "WTF was that???"

I don't think it's real. If you click over to the user's videos which is (user name = HyundaiNews), there is an "interview" with Rhys Millen. It looks like a video someone took while Mr Millen was giving a talk to a large group of people.

Also, it really bothers me that the video says "Happy Birthday Mustang" rather than "Happy Birthday, Mustang."

Oh, right on. That explains the MFR plates, which I just noticed. Thanks for clearing that up!

The video is made by an employee who works at Hyundai. He has personal ties with the VP, product designers and engineers.

there is more to a sports car than just drifting.. I am fed up with all these drifting photos and videos of genesis..

but that said, I have a very high regard for hyundai for their value for money cars.. and they don't copy as much as chinese to sell cheap

The only Hyundai that I have really liked, is the ONLY ONE that Hyundai refuses to promote in any possible way! That would be the Azera Limited.

Whatever, I am still, and always will be a Mustang fan, presently owning 3.

I think the jump cuts are supposed to symbolize the length of time it would have taken to spell out the whole "Happy Birthday". A couple continuous shots and people would be "that wasn't enough time to do THAT"... I don't think it was because the car can't do continuous burnouts. It is kind of annoying though.

Kinda cool though. I doubt this had huge marketing support (why it isn't an expensive glitzy production), so it was probably done by a handful of people on their own time to achieve a viral video status.

As much as I love an (almost) Evo-engined rear-drive affordable sport coupe, that comes with a six-speed standard, and has a stripped-out R-spec version, the new Mustang has a charisma that the Genesis can't match. As much as I don't like the low-revving engine, the ancient rear suspension, the mere five-speed transmission, the sheer style and quality construction of the Mustang bowls it all over. Sorry, Hyundai, but I'm not in love with the Genesis like I am with the Mustang, and I bet that's what anyone else would say.

Its not Evo engined. Although the basic architecture is the same, the Evo's block is semi closed deck and designed for heavy duty forced induction. The Genesis block is open deck and a lot weaker. An Evo bottom end would be a great upgrade.

What a waste of 30 seconds.

If there's anything that can kill the allure of the Genesis coupe, it's 20 seconds of video of it ricing around a parking lot. Hyundai should hope similar video never makes it on television.

I agree, probably put on by some small marketing group from Hyundai, and cheesy though it may be, I can see the point.

Unfortunately for Hyundai and Hyundai fans, the V6 Genesis gets chewed up and spit out by the Mustang GT, but there's no confusing the fact that the Genesis will compete with it.

Still, if it is real, then hats off to them for sending a shout out to another car company, it says a lot.

Long live the Mustang...often hated, often imitated...still the original....

Nice back-handed compliment, methinks. Listening to the engine, I could not help imagining a Mustang V8 sitting in the background, watching silently. Then, when the Genesis coupe got all done spelling out "Happy Birthday" in tire, the Mustang fires up, growling V8 sounds coming out the tailpipe. Hard to beat the aural beauty of an American V8. (VW R32 surprisingly does a nice imitation...though definitely not the same)

Can't wait to see what Ford has up its sleeve for the 50th anniversary. For the Corvette, it was in the middle of the C5 run, we got a cool paint job and interior emblems stitched on the seats. With the Mustang, it will either coincide with the last model year of the current iteration, or with the next generation. I'd love to see a bit more than a paint job (a difference along the lines of the "Bullitt" Mustang).

You're telling me Hyundai can use the Mustang logo without permission?

I hope those jump cuts appeal to the kids nowadays, for me it doesn't really work.
I'm referring to the text at the end which has the Mustang logo at the bottom. It's not in the background, it's up front and center.
I think that the ford logo was on the car in the background. I am sure that there is a technicality that this uses to not break copyright protection. Besides, all in all it was a complement.

The jump shots just make me dizzy...

I'm sure Ford fans will do the same for the Genesis on its 45th birthday. ;)

      LAWLZ @ one-legger burnouts.

This seems like Hyundai's way of asking the mustang if it's cool to hang out. As if they are in the same league or something. Sorry Hyundai, you have to actually earn that right first, not kiss the mustang's @ss. Your not in the same league/genre/class so stop pretending your are some kind of pony car competition.
