If there's one thing you can count on the internet, it's that everyone has an opinion and they aren't afraid to deliver their two cents. So when dueling billboards from Audi and BMW turned up on Santa Monica Blvd., the Photoshoppers got to work with what they felt would be appropriate counter responses. Some of those alternatives have turned up in the Fourtitude.com forums, a site dedicated to all things bearing four rings.

Now, Audi is asking anyone who's interested in chiming in to post their own alternative billboard designs on its Facebook page. If you become a fan of the page and craft your own response, RSVP to the LA Billboard War event. Attendees to the event can upload their images for all the Facebook world to see and comment on.

      I reckon you guys need to think laterally... Audi's advertising agency must have anticipated a response from BMW, and a long time before Audi placed the bill board add they will have brain-stormed BMW's likely list of responses and then worked out a slogan/word to trump it.

      Audi WILL come back with a witty reply IMHO.

      Incidentally, Ive lost count of the amount of times Ive been playing chess and my opponent has mistakenly called 'check mate'.

      Just an FYI for all you audi fanboi's. The fastest Audi r8 time around the Nurburgring is 8:04, and guess what, the fastest e92 m3 time is 8:05. For 40 thousand dollars less, I would say that audi placing the r8 up there would not work for anything, since the bmw can run the same times for less than 2/3 of the price.

      While salesmen at BMW can't stop laughing at the Audi. Salesmen at Audi dealer are too busy selling cars.

      There are NO LOSERS here. BWM wins for a great comeback, and Audi wins for outselling BWM.

      This is a great example of the right way to do marketing: Get the customers involved.

      Venables Bell & Partners (Audi's Agency of Record), knows what they're doing. They are not going to the public because they can't come up with a better response. They're going to the public because getting your customers involved in the brand is the primary goal of marketing. That's why they went straight to Audi fanboy heaven, Fourtitude. And since then, I'm sure the boys and girls over there have been having a field day with this.

      Audi doesn't yet have the brand cache that BMW does, so they are (wisely) building a bit of a grass roots campaign. And judging by their sales numbers, they are doing something right.

      As to what Audi can say after "checkmate"... well, no one ever said they were playing chess.

      "Sorry BMW, we changed the rules."

      At any rate, a good example of a well run campaign.

        Yep; put up the RS4 or 5 next, with "Game-changer" as caption and pivot the prior "argument" into irrelevance.

        Whether it's irrelevant or not, and whether or not the RS is actually a better car, they'll have successfully used BMW's advertising dollars to make their point.

        I think an ad like "Your move" doesn't necessarily anticipate, much less *expect*, BMW to buy a competing response advert across the street. Y'all are giving these guys way too much credit here. After all, what about all the other places in LA, much less the USA, where the "Your move" advertisement also appeared?

        I see your point in the macro sense, but if we just think about the billboards then checkmate is the end game. :)

      Mercedes should pop in with a billboard with an SLR McLaren or even an SL65 AMG and have the only words say..."Hey guys!"

      I really don't take sides in the German car war but that would be hilarious!
