I wonder how long it will be before CARB will ban drifting because of some environmental reason.

PiCASSO: It's a sport, just like figure skating, and I think similar people enjoy both sports.

What is the point of driving around a track sideways when it is slower than a racing line?

It's not a race to the finish. It's a judged event.

because it's entertaining to some people? I'm personally not so good at it, but I love watching someone talented.

It's more like a game of chicken. If you can trip up the guy behind you, you win. If he is forced to straighten out and pass you, your win. I find the American style of drifting to be pretty boring actually, mostly done on oval tracks it makes for a pretty lame course. I do enjoy watching Japanese events: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7QQlJRY9BI
It's like a movie car chase as a sport, what's not to like?
PiCASSO 11:25AM (4/04/2009)
I'll be honest... I never understood the popularity of drifting. I can see it being used in a movie's car chase sequence for a very long turn... but after 6 or 7 times (like in the 3rd Fast & Furious movie) it becomes obnoxious.
I don't consider this much of a sport... because you can think of other things you can do with the car and be judged by your ability to finesse it. Like two wheeling... for example, who can drive the longest or maneuver through a course on two wheels.
But regardless, if it entertains people... like UFC... enjoy it. Happy to see that there is a bunch of domestic players in the competition... where that Solstice looks like a close cousin of the 350Z (at least from the front).

tankd0g: damn that looks so much better than the american drifting, and the announcers just add to the drama :)

Same reason people like driving manual cars even though sequential manual surpasses the ol stick. It's about control and having fun. Different strokes for different folks.

A Scion Tc for drifting... it just needs a complete powertrain conversion, which makes me ask what's the point. Of course Toyota doesn't currently sell anything close to a sports car in the US, so they have make a Frankenstein car.

It's still more Toyota than their NASCAR :)
Rev 11:43AM (4/04/2009)
An econocar for drifting? You're joking... The tC is a POS econocar that sadly, doesn't even get very good gas mileage...
Steve 1:48PM (4/05/2009)
To be fair, one wonders how close any of the drift cars are to their stock bretheren. The drivetrain might be replaced even if their already RWD.
That said - it does still seem rather out of place.
Regarding Rev;s comment - The tC isn't a POS. It's not a sports car, but it's a perfectly solid, good looking, reasonably well performing car for the price. As for the gas milage, as with any other car, the official estimates don't tell the whole tale. I get 28-30mpg with a commute that's about 40/60 highway/city. On long highway trips I get 36mpg without doing anything special. That's about the same as any other 2.4L I know of.
