Acrua ZDX Concept - Click above for a high-res gallery

After a series of spy shots and a handful of teasers, Acura has finally given a name to its BMW X6-fighting crossover: the ZDX. Due to arrive in concept form at next week's New York Auto Show, the all-new ZDX is described by Acura as a luxury four-door sports coupe "with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility." Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales, says the "ZDX prototype is unlike anything you have ever seen from Acura." From Acura, yes. From BMW...

The Acura ZDX evolve from a lightly-veiled "concept" into a production model slated to go on sale this fall. Powertrains haven't been revealed yet, but we'd suspect either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged V6 to be available at launch. Acura's press release is posted below the fold.

All-New Acura ZDX to Debut at New York International Auto Show

Acura announced it will debut a prototype of the all-new ZDX luxury four-door sport coupe at the New York International Auto Show. The prototype features striking coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility to define a new luxury category.

"The ZDX prototype is unlike anything you have ever seen before from Acura," said Jeff Conrad, vice president, Acura sales. "The prototype showcases a new level of luxury, style and refinement for Acura and speaks volumes towards our commitment to advancing the brand."

The production version of the ZDX prototype will bring a new level of prestige to the Acura lineup when it arrives at dealerships this fall and offer the latest advancements in performance, technology and safety.

The ZDX prototype will be introduced at the New York International Auto Show on April 8, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Acura booth.

OK, I'm a big Honda fan but this name is so stupid. Come Acura go back to name your cars and forget this silly way of naming your cars.
they need to put this in the "honda's failure" video.
      The name seems quite stupid.

Anyone else picture some sort of medical commercial when reading ZDX?

Seriously tho...who takes Acura seriously anymore. I laugh everytime I see a new TL or RDX.

I was thinking engine additive. "First there was Slick 50 ... then Dura Lube ... and now ... the 21st century additive, ZDX!!!"
This has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever been alive to witness-other than the X6. o_0
        • 6 Years Ago
I know! They should stop fighting the cars that don't matter. Acura needs to make a super car again. And don't tell the me economy sucks because people who buy 200K+ cars don't give a rip. RR sales up 28% in spite of the recession.

It answers a question nobody asked...

Why are these folks fighting it out in segments that haven't even fully developed/became a good business case? Sorry, "We need to do this 'cause Bavaria is doing it" is not a sound case.

Please let the Zitti-X be an April Fool's Joke!
Lol more like a rebuttal to t=an answer to a question nobody asked...

I'd accepted better, though, if it looked even a ion better than the X6.

Everyone said the same thing when M-B developed the CLS 4 door coupe mystic and now everyone and their grandma wants to be in the catagory...For M-B it was a home run. The rest of their line up depreciates at a rapid percentage except for the CLS and I should know because I wanted to buy one used no so long ago...was surprised at how the CLS has maintain its value...
Why Acura? Why? You don't even have a car to stand next to the Infiniti G or the 3-series!

Don't talk to me about the TL or the TSX. The G37S and 335i will gladly take their lunch money.
I don't think that this is intended so much an X6 "fighter" as it is a poor mans X6. The ZDX will surely be much cheaper than the X6.

Obvisouly, there is some room for debate on weather there is a market, I'm just saying I think that was Acura's thinking.
Also given that the X6 debuted only abolut a year ago this would have had to be well along in development before the X6 came out.
i just dont get why acura would make this instead of a new NSX.
it looks very cool, ill admit that, but i dont really get how its a four door SUV coupe. But then again look at the Mercedes CLS. It doesnt make sense either but hey, it sells well.
I thought it was good business-sense to produce something if the competition is selling lots of similar products...is the X6 a runaway sales success? I've only seen one of two on the road. I can understand Honda, though, as they were left behind with hybrids and they don't want to miss this boat too.

      Um yeah, that's it.

Sorry, but Honda has lost it's way with Acura.
Say what you want, I think the X6 is a killer looking car. It's aggressive looking, gives you a taller box to haul things but handles more like a car than an SUV and doesn't give you the family-truckster look of a wagon.
I agree with you Mike. It gives the utility of an SUV but handles more like a car. But I do wish the Japanese automakers would make more sport wagons like BMW and Audi. They sell so well in Europe but do horrible here because of the stigma of owning a wagon even though an SUV is basically a wagon that has higher ground clearance. I hate the way SUVs handle so I doubt I will ever get one myself but I'd consider something like the ZDX.

"The ZDX prototype is unlike anything you have ever seen before from Acura"

That's true, We first saw it on the Pontiac Aztek, then on the BMW's twin Azteks. Hey guy, the first two didn't work so what makes you think your Aztek will?

And they killed the RSX for the RDX and this ... genius.
The RSX was not killed to be replaced by a SUV.

The TSX became the entry level car for Acura. Acura does not need a car-hatchback.
Your quote: "And they killed the RSX for the RDX and this ... genius"

you are an idiot. you said acura killed the rsx FOR the rdx.

lets add stupid to that as well.

        thanks for proving me right.
Yeah, I don't get what BigWill is trying to say either. It came off as sounding like you were saying that Acura killed off the RSX to be replaced by the RDX, which makes no sense.

Anyway, I think we all agree that the BMW X6 is not really a segment that needs competition. I dunno, maybe Acura can get the styling to work, but based on their recent styling changes, methinks not.

And I tried to lighten the front-face picture, but to no avail. Can't see much detail at all.
        Mmmkay ... one more try:

        1) Acura killed off the RSX in 2006, a sporty, four cylinder, two-door hatchback.
        2) Acura introduces the RDX in 2007, a sporty, four cylinder, foor-door hatchback (aka CUV)
        3) Killing off the RSX and it's Integra following was an incredibly dumb move
        4) Introducing the RDX - a CR-V with sucky mileage - was an incredibly dumb move.
        5) Introducing the ZDX when none of their current CUVs or SUVs or RLs is selling particularly well is an incredibly dumb move.
        6) Thinking that RSX buyers will gravitate to a $30K TSX 4-door sedan as opposed to, say, a $24K Genesis Coupe Turbo R-Spec or a $24K V6 Camaro Coupe is an incredibly dumb move.

        How's that?
"you are an idiot. you said acura killed the rsx FOR the rdx"

I repeat - I NEVER said replace. And since you want to get technical about it, one could say the RDX replaced the RSX. There was a blank slot in Acura's line when the RSX was killed and they filled it - i.e., "replaced" it - with another vehicle - the RDX. Has nothing to do with whether the RDX was comparable or not.
I guess we've found the first buyer for the Acura Aztek 'cause speaking of "IDIOT" your reading comprehension is in the toilet.

        1) I never said the RDX replaced the RSX
        2) BTW if you can actually read, go check your Acura History Book:
        a) Acura killed off the RSX at the end of MY 2006.
        b) Acura introduced the RDX in MY 2007.

Or do you need it spelled out more clearly?

The only X6 fighter needed is someone or something that will slay it dead.
True, I've only seen two on the road as well. Maybe they're the same ones?
Ha! Maybe ... was one in Chicago, the other in Boston? Hell, for all I know, they were the same car, and the tool's been fallowing me around!
