Chevrolet releases Cruze pricing - for U.K.

While the Chevy Cruze isn't coming to the U.S. until 2010, the attractively styled compact is set to go on sale in Europe this July. General Motors released pricing for the Cruze in advance of its Euro launch, and the Bow Tie brand is going right after the bottom line of the Ford Focus. The Cruze starts at £11,545 ($15,883 in U.S. dollars) with a 1.6-liter, 111-hp petrol engine. That's about £1,800 cheaper than the Focus, giving the fuel efficient Cruze the price edge in a down automotive market. Opt for the 1.6-liter petrol LS model and expect to part with £12,595 ($17,335). The top of the line LT model comes equipped with a 1.8-liter gas engine or 2.0-liter diesel and starts at £13,595 ($18,712).
While prices in the UK typically don't translate well to U.S. dollars, $15,883 for the base Cruze would put it in the same price class as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. We should, however, receive a discount for having to wait a year longer than the Europeans.

It will be interesting to see how this car stacks up against the new Mazda3.
Between the Mazda3, this and the upcoming Euro Focus...it's a great time to shop in this segment. So many features, perfect size/weight, good looks and great price...why buy anything more expensive!

Not sure if this car (with a torsion beam rear suspension) can compete with Mazda3, it's a great looking car though.

The English mag Autocar has already posted a "First Drive" review of the 1.8L Cruze on their website:
http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/Chevrolet-Cruze-1.8-LT/238647/
To summarize, they say that while those who enjoy the sporty response of a Focus (or, presumably, a Mazda 3) will find it too dull to be impressive, the Cruze's big-car ride and refinement, in combination with its good looks, will make it competitive among non-sporting competitors (i.e. the Corolla).
Good stuff for a car that's essentially a Daewoo (in fact, it's already on sale in South Korea as the 2009 Daewoo Lacetti), but I suspect those counting on a "game changer" might be a little deflated when it finally arrives Stateside.

@ Carbolt:
The torsion-beam rear suspension on the Cobalt SS has gone pretty far with in the comparison tests:
1st Place out of 4 cars:

3rd Place out of 7 cars:

I'm not a big fan of the styling of the Cobalt and will probably never buy one, but dynamically you can get a lot out of the torsion-beam setup.

Is this meant to replace the Vauxhall Astra, or replace it?
Bunch of idiots.

2010 is looking like a fun year for new cars - hopefully the economy is in recovery by then.
The Cruze is looking good!

Remove 17.5% or 15% for Sales tax, 10% EU import tax (if built outside europe) and a few hundred pounds for road tax, registration and delivery and you should get a more comparable price.

How about the price for the 1.4 turbo? The "game-changing" motor. People will still choose corolla`s a civic`s over this anyways.

Pity, ain't it?

Not really :P
Rob 9:33AM (3/11/2009)
Hey you're right, I would choose either of those over this. Not because they are better, but because those companies have a history of decent small cars, and have MUCH higher resale values. If GM could guarantee the value of my vehicle in a few years to be comparable to the Civic, sure, then maybe I'd CONSIDER it. Til then, no thanks.
BigWill 9:35AM (3/11/2009)
GM has said several times that the US Cruze will be more expensive than the Civic or Corolla. With or without the 1.4 turbo, that pricing strategy is suicide for the Cruze.
Bloke 9:37AM (3/11/2009)
The 1.4 litre turbo will not be used in the European-spec Cruze, at least not initially. That engine is slated to be sued in the mk6 Astra, however.
compy386 11:16AM (3/11/2009)
@Rob: It's called a lease.
Epyx 12:50PM (3/11/2009)
Actually a lease is generally higher on cars with poor resale value. Remember the concept if the lease is the sell it again at the end of the lease term.
Besides, can you even lease GM vehicles anymore?

From Cavalier to Cobalt to Cruze in just about a decade. GM does love changing names, does it not?

The old J-platform Cavalier should have been pensioned off at the same time it was in most other global markets - in 1989.
Mazda FTW! 9:48AM (3/11/2009)
Well if the old name plates didn't have brand value...
You don't see a 2009 Tercel do you :P
Yikes 9:48AM (3/11/2009)
GM doesn't want you to remember the Cavalier, Cobalt...I wonder what the Cruze will be renamed.
