Woodward Dream Cruise retreating back across 8 Mile

Last year, organizers for the Woodward Dream Cruise teamed up with Motorcities National Heritage Area to bring the classic car festivities all the way from the southern suburbs in Oakland County to Downtown Detroit. Ironically, it was the first year that the longstanding event officially entered the Motor City itself. Next year, the Dream Cruise will retreat back across 8 Mile and out of Detroit. Why? The economy, of course, as it seems the Detroit-specific programs didn't earn enough money to repay the costs associated with promoting and running them.
The good news is that the 2009 edition of the Dream Cruise is still on schedule to run on a hot, humid Woodward weekend in August, and Autoblog will be there to bring you live coverage as always.

Actually, the weather last year was utterly perfect for the Dream Cruise.
And if you go to the Cruise you don't really want to head any further south than Ferndale anyways, everything you'd want to see is up north.

My buddy and I went a couple years ago and we stayed around Birmingham and Bloomfield. That seemed to be where all the nice cars were.

Many don't realize that the Dream Cruise is more of a curse to local businesses than help (with the exception of bars and restaurants) because all available parking is used up.

That's just common sense,
how can anything sound of 8mile compete with Birmingham and/or Royal Oak when it comes to amenities, food or bars? You can walk from woodward to main street in RO...

Moved to Birmingham just last year and was in person for the first time - it was awesome. A friend of ours has a shop on Woodward just south of 14 mile - he sent up a tent with toys for the kids and food inside of the store. He was more than happy to have everyone there - didn't mind the lost business.
The thing with the cruise is it takes so freaking long because there are so many cars - took my ride from 14 mile to 12 mile and back and it took 3 hours.
Can' wait till this year provided it is not a procession of the former Big 3.

Would love to go, but left MI two years ago for FL. That weekend was always a ton of fun though!

I actually got rear ended at the intersection in that picture while working in the area last summer. Awesome.

I dont think that the Cruise will be affected by the economy as much as some think. Most hardcore enthusiasts don't care about new cars much, or gas prices. It's cheap family fun, and gas for family cruising should still be relatively inexpensive by summer. The vendors may be affected a bit.
I just wish that people would try to keep their SUV's out of the 2 designated cruising lanes. I know that they want to see the parked cars, but they block the view of the cruisers trying to see the cars on display. It irks me when I'm stuck next to a Yukon or Expedition and cant see anything.
The local PD's may start crying about their budgets being affected by the cops overtime, though.
I had a good laugh when some kid in a Mustang gave his tires a slight chirp and some cops on foot walked up to the car and pulled him over! You REALLY should not do burnouts in a traffic jam!!!!
