Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Chevy Camaro Indy Pace Car

The Chevrolet Camaro and the Indy 500 have a long and storied relationship. Chevy's seminal pony car made its first trip round the Brickyard as a pace car way back in 1967 – it's first year on the market. The '67 Camaro pace car has gone on to earn iconic status in the eyes of car collectors across the country, and following that inauguration, the Camaro went on to pace the Speedway again in 1968, 1982 and 1993. All of those appearances marked something truly special in the life of General Motors' popular pony car, and 2009 will bring yet another to the fore as the newly-revived Camaro will once again pace the 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24, 2009.

This isn't the first go-round for the 2009 Chevy Camaro this year; last Sunday, an orange and gray SS made its left-turn-only debut at the Daytona 500. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

      I'd rather see a ZR-1

The rice cars won't be able to keep up...

To bad it will not be in 1969 paint trim.

Are tasteful graphics too much to ask for?
Are any pace car graphics ever tasteful? Just wondering...

I could have sworn I wrote something about graphics.

Hey... I like Torrent, he just might be drunk or something, chill out.

I was already banned twice for talking about my Genitals in great detail.

He doesn't deserve it for what he said, whatever that was.

Let's hope private funding is handling this one. If Obama and his group of merry pranksters find out about this and find out GM is footing the bill with "bailout" money, all hell will break loose.
Hey. The Camaro is tradition, so stfu.
Yep, the Obama and his socialism bandwagon is rolling strong in 2009 now that the government is reaching into just about every sector of private industry.

Finally a PACE car that can keep up.

      Honda is a JOKE.
@DICK CoiLOVER... bitch all you want, without Honda there would be no IRL today or elite open wheel racing of any kind in America.

True racing enthusiasts know whats going on.

Glad to see that GM is able to put up a few dollars and throw in a couple of pace cars. And to make the most of its sponsorship, it'd be great if the consumer edition of the Camaro pace car would be more than just a cosmetic package.

I don't see any Chevrolets trying to race against those Hondas in INDY!

Wonder why they didn't go for the classic white/orange combo?
I wish they could've done a white car with some orange or blue on it like either the 67 or 69 pace car. I'm not too thrilled about the silver and red theme.

Btw, there should be a correction in the article. The Camaro paced Indy in 69, not 68.

Yo, Torrent, call me computer illiterate because I do not know what "stfu" stands for (socialist tactics for the ugly?), but as for tradition you must be kidding. With the election of Obama you can kiss tradition good bye unless you have the ones in mind made famous by Mao, Joseph, and my all time favorite, Adolph. Are we in for fun times or what?

Yeah, I tried to reply to Torrent but no go.

I saw this car in person yesterday. It is on display at the indy 500 track museum. Had to hit it up before my flight home. It was sharp and looked great. Then to see it was just anounced a couple days ago was kind of ironic.
