eBay Find of the Day: '85 Camaro IROC Z28 with four miles, mullet not included

If you were able to suddenly don a mullet and hop in Doc Brown's time machine to travel back to the year 1985, you'd find that the pinnacle of affordable performance was available at your local Chevy dealership in the form of the Camaro IROC-Z. This was the first year that the Z was offered, and though this particular example seems to be equipped with the 4-barrel 305 and a five-speed stick, the IROC was the first Camaro to get the Tuned Port Injection engine, which displaced 305 cubic inches and offered up an impressive-for-the-day 215 horsepower, hooked up to a four-speed automatic transmission. Other uplevel bits included 16" 5-spoke alloy rims and meaty 245/50ZR16 tires cribbed from the Corvette.
Here we are in 2009, and most of these cars were snatched up by young, hot-headed male drivers once they hit the used market, meaning that nearly all of the Z's still on the road are in less-than-stellar condition. Fortunately, eBay has come to the rescue once again with an auction for a factory-fresh '85 IROC with just 4.3 miles on the odometer. Most of the parts are there, minus the stock set of wheels and tires, but the car has been sitting for the last 23 years inside a warehouse of some sort. Perhaps it's a gem underneath all that dust and muck, but expect to perform lots of hard work if you actually want to make it drivable again.
The current bid is well over $15K and the reserve has not yet been reached. We're not sure what an untouched '85 IROC is really worth, but apparently it's a bit more that we'd have guessed. Check out our gallery below and click here for the original auction page, and just to get you in the proper mood, we've included a couple of period Camaro commercials after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Charles!

Nice comment from a Mopar fan.

That's okay, if it's a real Black F-Body, it'll be able to turbo boost start, turn over into super pursuit mode, and then scan it's way onto the road, and drive itself there.

WOW!
How the hell does a car from 1985 only have 4 miles?
I would never be able to let ANY car sit undriven.

Yeah, also, if it only has four miles, why are the tires unmatched. The rears are even snows. As mentioned, the motor in this car is most likely the L69, not the 305. I bet someone bought an 85 camaro, slapped some IROC-Z stickers on it and called it a day. Fast forward to 2009 and the car has sat for a long time and appears to be a genuine IROC-Z. But I'd bet my next paycheck it has more then 4 miles on it. Its not that hard to rewind the odometer in those old cars.

maybe it has 1,000,004.3mi...

If it's legit, nearly half of the mileage was travelling between the end of the assembly line and the marshalling yard which was located a mile or so away.
Yep, these sleds were truly the pride of Norwood, Ohio. BTW, if you've ever been to Norwood, you know that's not saying much...

I'd look at the interior pics before arguing too hard that the mileage is faked. *NO* interior from 1985 still looks that fresh, let alone one from GM.

I guarantee you this is not a 1985 IROC-Z. I graduated high school in 85 and got one for my graduation gift. Black was not offered until '86. I wanted black, but got my second choice of blue. The TPI was only offered with an automatic in 85. This is a 5-speed. This is not picture of the rear of the car, so we can't see if it has a third brake light. That was not offered until '86. The VIN listed in the auction is for an '85 Camaro.
Also, the listing mentioned the wheels were removed because custom wheels were planned. At this time, the factory wheels cost $250 ea. I know. I busted one and had to replace it. There were barely any choices in tires, much less wheels in 85. 16" tires and wheels were not common and very expensive. The upgrade for most cares in 85 was to get 15" wheels and tires.

Probably.
I was only a year old when that car was made.

"Italian Retard Out Cruising"-Z...does anyone remember the SNL sketch?

Well, the car has a low-powered engine, a fun-sucking slushbox, and large squishy tires with quarter-century old driving dynamics. What's the motivation?

The car has a five speed manual.
Look at the photos next time.

Man, if you were anywhere between 12 and 25 back in 1985 then the IROC was the shiznit. I'd love to have a cherry IROC someday but as with most f-bodies and Mustangs, they're quickly destroyed by punks who drunkenly pop curbs and think that doing maintenance is putting on a $500 whale tail.

Well then they need to update the story because it says this,
"and this particular example came equipped with the Camaro's first Tuned Port Injection engine, in this case displacing 305 cubic inches and offering up an impressive-for-the-day 215 horsepower, hooked up to a four-speed automatic transmission."
For those that didn't look closely at the pics(like me) we'd assume it was an auto based on what was written.

The proverbial nice and clean example (not literally, as seen on the photo, though).
Only 4 miles in over 20 years? How'd that happen? did the driver just drive the car home and forget about it?

Not hard to do.
A guy that lived (his parents are still there) down the street from me restores old cars (he has such examples as a Maxwell, 49 Ford and a Model T in his garage). His mom went out and bought a 93 Ford Mustang 5.0. They went to the Mustang plant and trailered it back to their house (a whopping three or so mile drive at the time).
Now that same car had about 15 miles on the odometer as of a year ago. They have driven it around the block a few times but mostly it gets backed out of the garage, started up and runs for a good twenty minutes of so and put back into the garage. Supposedly they have gotten some ridiculous deals on it but the mother refuses to sell...
