Autoblog does video: Introducing P1

Click above to see the trailer for P1
There are car videos everywhere - we've even brought you a few homemade ones over the years. This year, we decided it was time we put something together that would showcase our own take on cars, so we teamed up with the gents at StreetFire to create P1. We can't tell you exactly what P1 is going to bring you – that would spoil the surprise – but we can tell you it falls somewhere between your typical enthusiast vid and a Bollywood film. Oh, and it will be beautiful - the guys at StreetFire can guarantee that much. Follow the jump to check out the trailer, and as usual, don't be afraid to let us know what you think. The first episode drops next Wednesday, March 4. See you then.

That poor, poor man, having to drive so many impractical, expensive cars.
So many gas-guzzlers, most saddled with the horrors of rear-wheel drive, manual transmissions, and restrictive seats, designed for handling and not outright comfort - it must be hell.
Having to heel-and-toe, feeling the sickening squish of 1+ G in turns, the smell of high-octane fuel and hot rubber - oh, the humanity.
I would take his place, if only to ease his suffering.
My heart goes out to him.

It's like you crossed a Jeremy Clarkson DVD with Knight Rider 2.
Just kidding looking forward to the first episode. If anything, it'll be better than Knight Rider. In fact you should air it at the same time Knight Rider airs.

So far not so good. The cars are sweet but the camera work and editing are poor. Half of it looks like bad "Ken Burns" effect done on still photos downloaded from Google.
Also, the guy looks rather douchey when he enters the car. Was the seat too far forward? Looks like he had to squeeze in. Not a cool entrance or exit and definitely not evoking James Bond as I am confident you guys hoped.

The music is terrible, but I am sure you are limited to what can be done there. The still photos are lame and overused - as is the previously mentioned KB effect (and not used well at that). High School kids make more complicated edits on iMovie for YouTube videos showing off Guitar Hero exploits. The actual video portions are not bad (less the guy entering and exiting). More actual video and less lame stills and get some more up-beat music. I understand the refined Robb-Report you are attempting but its not working and comes of forced.
Just my opinion. C-

Also - the P1 logo clashes with the theme to some extent. The expensive dignified approach of the car selection, music and theme do not match the race inspired logo. Minor quip but still not consistent.

Anyone else notice that he went and sat in the DBS and put the key in, and then got out at the same place? Nice work on not going anywhere.

That is known as a continuity problem.

Jonathon you let out the secret of how to start an Aston Martin. It is always amusing to put people in the driver's seat of one and then tell them they have two minutes to figure out how to start it.

Dude, I have an idea. Since you will be getting opinion from many amateur Final Cut buffs, how about making a contest out of this.
Post a series of raw video, stills, and the lame audio track (all used in this video) to an FTP site that can be readily downloaded by AB readers. We submit back to you our interpretations of how this could be better edited and put together in a clip of the same length as this version. You guys vote and see how the critics stack up. Maybe post the best 3 submissions on the blog.

I'm going to risk sounding like a massive Top Gear fanboy... but...
AB could learn a lot from Top Gear.. Their cinematography is superb. From their fly-bys to just a simple cruising shot, the camera is steady, the car is in focus, and the music brings it all together to elicit an intense emotional reaction...
Take the Vietnam episode, for instance. Jeremy, James, and Richard are riding piece of crap bikes, but you still feel for them, and you are still inspired by what you are watching...
If P1 could do that, I'd be sold.

In defense of this short video (it is not good) but comparing it to Top Gear is a little wrong. That is the same as benchmarking a Starwars fan video on YouTube to George Lucas and the real thing. This is a no-budget amateur project (I hope) while TopGear is highly funded and worked by professionals.
If Top Gear is the Mona Lisa than this is a Velvet Elvis. One compares a Velvet Elvis to other Velvet Elvi, not Ms. Lisa.

That's true... but at the same time, by saying that you're producing a video that "...falls somewhere between your typical enthusiast vid and a Bollywood film." implies that they are attempting to use some semblance of professional production...
As other comments have stated, high school kids (myself included, while I was in high school) have made higher quality car videos and/or trailers.

Great concept AB!
The cinematography is a little unprofessional. Here is a pretty good link to reference some reall good vehicle cinematography: http://www.supercarmovies.com/html/interface.html
