At the Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks, Mitsubishi will be showing a second electric car concept in addition to the iMiEV Sport Air they recently teased. This one is called the Prototype iMiEV concept and at first glance it looks much like the iMiEV that we've been seeing for the past year and a half. Those cars that we've been seeing and test driving are "Japanese Domestic Market" (JDM) models and are not legal in most places outside of Japan. The iMiEV is based on the "Kei-class" i mini-car and only comes in right hand drive for use on Japanese roads.

According to the Mitusbishi press release, this new prototype concept shows a version adapted to other markets. That means left hand drive, a slightly wider track and longer overhangs to meet European safety requirements. No decision has been made yet on offering the iMiEV outside of Japan, but Mitsubishi will be using this concept to gauge potential interest.

Mitsubishi Motors to show Prototype i MiEV concept at 2009 Geneva Show


Tokyo, February 12, 2009 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is to give the Prototype i MiEV concept model its global debut at the 79th Geneva International Motor Show which runs from March 3 through March 15 at the Geneva Palexpo exhibition and conference complex (opening to the general public on March 5).

With feasibility testing now underway in Europe, the possibility for Mitsubishi Motors' i MiEV electric car to be launched in Europe draws tantalizingly close.

While no final decision has been made yet as to whether or when the car will be launched, Mitsubishi will continue to gauge reactions through a further exercise: the Prototype i MiEV show car.

To be unveiled at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show next to the i MiEV SPORT AIR concept, this latest iteration introduces left-hand-drive to the equation and conceptualizes - amongst other items - the wide(er) tracks and long(er) overhangs of a potential European specification i MiEV.

As a reminder, i MiEV represents the pinnacle of Mitsubishi Motors' green technologies. Currently involved in testing and promotional activities in Japan, New Zealand, the United States and Europe, the car will be launched in Japan during the summer of 2009.

      Gauge Interest? I want one. Consider the interest gauged.

      It should cost around 15 000€ imo to be viable as an alternative to the internal combustion option.

      Let's see - a car that uses zero gas and can be charged by solar panels on the roof of your home for free with very close to zero pollution or CO2? I think everyone in the world wants one or two of these last year! Hurry up the cakes Mitsubishi! When can I pre-order one?

      I want one as well. My next car will have a plug and be my commuting car - this looks perfect - if its basically a slightly larger iMiev - I'm there.

      Ahhhh.... Don't buy that, this is underpowered, short ranged, little, costly, heavy and batteries exist since 100 years and nobody is driving on batteries alone since 100 years. They even sell this car without a small inboard gasoline batteries recharger and performance enhancer. I won't buy without a gasoline recharger, i don't want to be struck on the road, this is dangerous and i don't want to sit 6 hours in the car each 120 miles while travelling in north-america on vacations. If you don't go on vacation, it mean that you work with your car instead of driving it with pleassure, so it don't replace a fun car like a tata nano.
      This is just a political car, commercialised to please big-oil and the oppressed car driver that now expect less car for more money with less power and range, a downsizing of the brain, soul, life, pleassure, liberty, it's not surprising that it his recommended by autobloggreen, chris m, hitler, goverment, bush, abc studios, afs-trinity, shell hydrogen, japan-u.s.a-europeen goverment, etc.

        While I am aware of a big oil agenda, and also aware of a tightening on liberties agenda, this is still a good car. It's got room for 4, a decent commute range and can be charged off the wall socket.

        This viehicle mated with renewable power generation technologies allows for complete off the grid living, limited only by the battery pack lifetime, which is something that would no doubt increase exponentially with investment, and one way to assure investment is to buy these things. The Li-Ion tech is already good enough to justify investment, and these things, with electric powertrains will outlive that technology and allow retrofit of new ones.

      A little "Automobile History 101": the very first automobiles (nee "horseless carriages') were toys for the rich, costing the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars. As the technology matured, and modern production techniques evolved, the cost was reduced by a factor of a thousand. The same evolution will occur with electric and hydrogen vehicles: new technology (funded by the federal government) combined with tax incentives (the first automobiles were possible because of government-built, paved roads) and subsidies will make these vehicles affordable. The fact is, we cannot afford to NOT build ecological vehicles... melting polar ice caps, vanishing species, a hole in the ozone... the "canary in the mineshaft" has spoken!

        Good point, but I must add that battery electrics and plug-in hybrids are affordable now for many drivers, while H2 fuel cell vehicles need substantial improvements to get prices down to affordable - about 5% of current H2 FCV costs.

        Also, most of the electric infrastructure plug-ins is already in place, while H2 fuels would need trillions for infrastructure. Finally, plug-ins are 3x more efficient than H2 electrolysis & H2 FCVs, and 12x more efficient than H2 electrolysis & H2 ICE vehicles.

        Looks like plug-ins will corner the "clean green" market before H2 even gets started!

      Yyyyyeeeeessssss!!! I wanted one of these two years ago! Can't wait to see the new left-hand prototype and read about its stats (battery pack, range, charging time, acceleration, etc.).

      A little piece of me died reading this headline. Are they really going back to the drawing boards, when they have been showing off a production ready (indeed, in production in Japan) vehicle for years?

      How many times are they going to ask if we want it before they let us buy it?

        The gas engined i is in production, not the iMiEV. The i doesn't meet regulatory requirements outside of Japan which is why they have to modify it to sell anywhere else. There is also that issue of moving the steering wheel over to the left side of the car.

        As for the question, it really comes down not do you want it? but rather do you want it at the cost for us to actually produce it? Sure everyone wants the iMiEV at $12-15,000. How many want it at $25-30,000?
