Pics Aplenty: Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro

Click above for a freshly-updated gallery of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro
The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro is ready to assume the mantle of "it" car for 2009. You probably still remember all the tasty details from our Detroit Auto Show coverage, but here's a brief refresher, just in case. The latest, greatest R8 packs Ingolstadt's 5.2L V10 under its glass engine cover. That lump, in this application, punches out 525 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, which should let the new, super-duper R8 sniff around the 200-mph barrier. We've had fond things to say about this V10 in both its lesser and more extreme forms. Will it be "just right" in the R8? We can't wait to find out firsthand. In the meantime, feast your eyes on a slew of new photographs just released by Audi. They're all in the gallery below.

hmm...is VW-AG shooting itself in the foot again? Gallardo is looking worse and worse every day.

Well, all other cars are starting to look really crap when compared to VW, sorry, Porsche group offerings.
Really, the F430 is slipping down my list of dream cars by the minute...

It's not VAG. It's Audi. Lamborghini is 100% under the Audi AG umbrella on the flow chart of VAG holdings. Which explains why the R8 exists. Really it's the usual formula that's made VAG what it is today. the TT-S/S3 allow for the new R20T, development costs recouped etc. The same holds for the R8, Gallardo handles the development costs, brilliantly sold for top dollar, and Audi can then utilize all of it however they like. There's no question as to why Audi's boss thinks they're doing as well as they are right now, no one else has a better distribution of development costs and platform sharing, while all the while keeping core brand DNA relatively in tact.

@zamafir - I completely agree. And Lambo will still sell as many LP560-4's as they can. The R8 probably won't hurt them at all. Not sure if a Lambo buyer would cross-shop the R8. Granted, $-for-$, the R8 may actually be a better package.
I was at the local Audi dealer here in Hartford and he actually had 2 R8's onthe floor. One sold, one from another store to bring in traffic (which in my case I slammed the breaks and pulled in!). That said, If I could afford an R8 or a Lambo, the R8 may be a better choice because I have no idea where the closest Lambo dealer is.

"...I have no idea where the closest Lambo dealer is."
My local Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Rolls Royce, BMW, Mercedes, and Maserati dealers are all within about a mile of each other on the same road. And, not much further down you will find Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Lotus. Bad part is there are no good roads to do through test drives on in the area.

zamafir - Agreed. Lamborghini under Audi is like a dream come true for a car fan. All the hot, sexy, exotic Italian good-feelings bolted down with German engineering and build quality. I've never been much of a Ferrari fan. Infact, Lambo is to Ferrari what Audi is to BMW/Merc. -> different.

Man oh man. This thing is never gonna look old. Instant classic. And that interior is like nothing else.
AUDI FTW

Lol I'm with you 100%, can't wait to drive this at infineon (provided the whole recession bit doesn't stifle audi's program).

Sounds nice, if not as mad as an LP560, but that's probably how it should be.

The last video, around 1:20, shows money doesn't buy driving talent.

I feel like I'm the only person on earth not totally in love with the R8. It is a nice car don't get me wrong, but when I see them, and I have seen dozens of them, I just kinda go "oh look that guy chose an Audi just like the rest of OC I bet his son drives a fwd A4 2.0t with tinted windows, black wheels, blacked out taillights, and if they are really stupid blacked out headlamps. Oh and I bet he spikes his hair!" I swear that's what goes through my mind. I'd take a Porsche Turbo cab or any number of used super cars Bentley GT, Aston DB9, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Spyker for that price.

Lmao, I love that elitist enclave, I really do - almost as much as I love how everyone in less affluent pockets still rabidly holds onto the OC title. Audi sells 1/3 the cars BMW does in the US, and everyone in the OC acts like they're played out. Maybe it's because BMW's have become as much a stable of white noise there as LV handbags. If you're seeing dozens then audi's reaching their goal of continued growth. They're one of only a few automakers to post gains at the end of 2008, and the only luxury car maker to post uninterrupted growth the last 13 months.
Though I'll admit, we all have preconceived notions about cars, and their drivers. I do the same thing some 50 something with thinning hair drives by in a Challenger.
Mazda FTW! 1:31PM (2/01/2009)
I don't live in the OC so I don't see them as much as you do. But I think the appeal of this car (and the Audi brand in general) is that it's different. For years, every well-to-do person bought Bimmers and Mercs and the wealthy picked up the same-'ol 911s and Ferraris. The R8 turns more heads here in Toronto than Ferraris and Porsches, of which there are dozens running around downtown and richer neighbourhoods such as Woodbridge.
I have been a Audi fan since the late 90s and esp with the first TT. Now I love how it's the "in" brand. And I can see why. The design is the closest thing to art on wheels, the interiors are stunning, great performance (esp for our winters with the quattro). And just the simple fact that you arent yet another guy with a base 325i stuck in traffic is reason enough.

you're not the only one
i can't think of a more boring looking supercar
it's just like a used bar of soap and it does nothing for me.

Did Audi release US prices yet?

Lamborghini LP560-4: EUR 173,740 / $198,000
Audi R8 V10: EUR 142,400
That's an 18% difference which would put the R8 between $160k-$165k.

This looks so cool and modern, much better than a boring and mundane 911
