Pics Aplenty: Chevy gets shutter happy with 2011 Volt

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2011 Chevy Volt
Look! It's a Chevy Volt in someone's driveway. While this scene isn't likely to occur in reality until some time in late 2010, General Motors apparently wants you to start dreaming about it now. We're dreaming about buying the home in the background of the image above, but for the sake of this post let's focus on the high-profile series hybrid parked in the drive. GM just released a bunch of new high-res images that show the Volt interacting with the world that exists beyond the photo studio. The extended-range electric vehicle looks like a high-tech, futuristic and, most importantly, real sedan when seen staged against the backdrop of suburbia, in front of a coastal village and hanging out under some palm trees. Check out the Volt's new glamour shots in the gallery of high-res images below and let us know if one will be in your driveway come 2011.

i'm kind of getting tired of all the teasing. GM is a big fan of talking up a product years before it comes to market, like the Camaro. I just hope for GM's sake that this car lives up to all the hype they are throwing at us.

I'm not sure they have much choice... GM at the moment has to constantly prove that they are actually alive and kicking and that desireable cars are on the way. Same was true when the Camaro concept was announced. Back then all the news about GM was how they were going to file for bankruptcy any day.
And even when they show these cars, people say oh whatever... by then Toyota will have something better, or it will never look like that by the time it comes to market, oh that's just vaporware, sure the interior looks good on the show car, but i bet the materials feel cheap, etc
Just imagine how much worse the perception of GM would be if we hadn't seen any cars that weren't coming out in the next year. And the perception does matter. It affects stock price, credit rating, etc

for all this hype... and for all the years we wait... and the whole time, Ford is going to have a Focus EV ready to go at the same time... it just seems Ford is putting their money where their mouth is, while GM keeps hyping the same thing for years and years.
and i'm sorry but the styling is bland and for what it will cost there just seems to be better alternatives.

CW - an all electric car is easy-peasy compared to the volt. WAY WAY simpler and far less engineering challenges

I don't think it's another 'talking up'.
Like you said, 'like the Camaro', they promised, they will deliver.
I do agree with some of other comments, though. It is too expensive.

The point is, unlike the Insight and the P(r)ius, this hybrid looks good, and not like a hybrid should look like according to the Japanese cookie cutter approach to car design. The interior will do for Chevy what the iPod has done for Apple. The technology will undoubtedly be good enough to deliver on the promise; anything else would be corporate suicide. GUve them a break and hope that GM makes it through long enough to commercialise it.

While I do think that the Volt will be a game changer in terms of technology, GM had the opportunity to also be a game changer in terms of an attractive design.
The prototype was really cool, but the production vehicle doesn't come close.
I realize there are practicalities, but this thing makes the Prius look attractive.

"This thing makes the Prius look attractive."
Are we looking at the same pictures? You think the Prius is better looking than ? Craziness!

While the Honda Insight needs a LOT to be desired the Toyota Prius has more beauty to it that this bland, boring and generic Volt. The concept was much better looking. I'm guessing that GM simply wanted to keep in stylistic-step with the rest of their ugly fleet.
GM is more interested in providing GIMMICKS and NEW-FACTOR (fleeting & fugitive) than they are with building objects of beauty and svelte-style that will transcend the test of time (like their autos prior to the 70s).

Where's the "2010 OR BUST" bumper sticker? :D

haha! that's a good one. 10-1 it'll be a bust.
i still think this car looks ugly as hell. prototype looked 100x better.
GM likes to fatten up its cars like a supermodel force-fed soul-food.
maybe Michigan women just don't have the curves anymore. lol...

Is this really going to be a 4-seat car? (look at the photos through the trunk.) That seems like a bad idea.
Otherwise, looks good. Starting to look like an actual car, rather than a show car or concept. I'm sure GM's competitors appreciate all the information they can get this far in advance.

Yeah it's a 4 seater. There's a center console that runs between the two back seats that has cup holders (maybe some storage too, not sure). It's there because it sits on top of the massive battery pack

I think I'm actually beginning to like this car

I agree. I think it looks great. The 40K pricetag isn't a hurdle. If I had the money, I wouldn't hesitate to pay it.
AntBee 11:07AM (1/22/2009)
Me, too! It really looks good to me for some reason now.

You realize that underneath it all what you are really saying is that you don't have $40k so it is a hurdle. You are not alone in this one. Most of the people raving about this car and saying it would be worth spending $40k on it don't have $40k to spend on a car. This will be an issue for the Volt in it's first generation and will make it a low volume vehicle at best. I love this car and what it says about what GM is capable of but would much rather see them focus on hitting a home run with the Cruze and other vehicles that the average buyer can afford and are going to sell in the kind of volume that saves a company. It was the crappy little K-car that saved Chrysler the first time and the run of the mill Neons and Intrepids that turned things around for them the second time. These cars might not be as exciting as the Volt project but they are far more important.

I guess the price tag of 40k will be the biggest hurdle to overcome for many prospective buyers.

I think you're right. Everything about this car seems so right except for the price. That it's only a 4 seater is a bit of a letdown too, but it looks great and if it drives ok then the price will be the deciding factor for most prospective buyers.
AntBee 11:09AM (1/22/2009)
$40K? For real, $40K?! Not in my price range at all, especially when they will ask for $50K in Canada!
