Cadillac bringing E-Flex coupe concept to Detroit

We've heard scads of rumors over the past year that General Motors plans to bring a Volt-based Cadillac to market, and it looks like we'll be seeing a concept of the new E-Flex Caddy at the Detroit Auto Show.
According to a report by BusinessWeek, the two-door coupe concept will use the same range-extending EV drivetrain as the Chevrolet Volt, although there's no word on whether the Caddy concept will send power to the front or rear wheels. BW sources say that the vehicle is smaller than the CTS and will feature a bolder exterior design than the CTS coupe. We'll be on hand in Detroit beginning this Sunday to see the Caddivolt concept in person, if it decides to show up.

For those of you who think that this photo is actually the front end of the car, and that it will simply be a rebadge of the Volt, please understand that it will look completely different (especially since it is a coupe and the Volt is a 4 door).

I hope you're right because rebadging cars without changing their looks is so 1980 and if GM keeps doing it I kinda hope they go under...

Please don't give us a Volt with a Cadillac badge. Give us, finally, a bad ass American interpretation of an alternative fuel vehicle. No American Toyotas (yes I'm talking to you Volt).

aerodynamics and obvious packaging choices will lead all 4 door high mpg vehicles to look similar
its really no worse than how similar all midsize sedans were 5-10 years ago

rwd is highly unlikely
for the brake regen, you need a generator on the front axle anyways and a motor/generator doesn't weigh or cost much more.
awd is more likely

can you explain that comment more? I don't see why the generator couldn't be on the front axle of a rwd car or why the generator would absolutely have to be on the front axle anyway.

@alex
Having it at the front axle makes for more effective regen braking because most of the braking done in cars are on the front wheels.
FWD means you can have both at the front or even have the motor act as a generator rather than having them separate; it makes for better packaging.
But it's not absolutely necessary, ie. like the Tesla Roadster which has the motor/generator for the rear wheels. You just sacrifice some of the regen braking efficiency.

I nearly spit out my lunch when I quickly glanced at the headline/photo! Thank goodness it's just a photoshop.....

Is it legal to have red lights on the front of the car? I have wondered that since they first showed the production volt.
In my younger days I once got stopped for having red marker lights in the front.
(don't judge we all made some poor style choices in our youth)

I think the lenses are a very dark amber (the photo also contributes to the red appearance). When they light up, they probably light up amber.
Like the indicators on the old CTS:

At least the blue headlights & lines make it look like a transformer. Robots in disguise. What's its name?

Good news I guess. If you are in the market for a luxury car the odds are you aren't worrying too much about gas prices, but the unique drivetrain is likely to draw in customers and it could help GM sell some volts at less of a loss.

Badge engineered Volt - they should make additional styling changes.

you're a complete idiot. i'd explain why, but i don't think you have the mental capacity to understand the explanation.
Rick 2:30PM (1/09/2009)
Why ? His (or her) name, or the comment ? Pls, do explain.
alex 4:02PM (1/09/2009)
Booger Eater is an idiot because he clearly doesn't realize that the photo on this post is a quick and dirty photoshop of a caddy grille pasted onto a Volt, instead of an actual photo of the car.
He should have realized this because:
a) It's obvious from looking at the picture
b) If you read the post, it's not about how they have obtained a photo of the concept, it's about how this concept is rumored to be unveiled in the future
c) The post says it's a coupe. The Volt is a sedan, which means it can't simply be a rebadge job
d) There are a bunch of previous comments that all talk about how this is a photoshop
yet he still didn't realize it. idiot.

@Booger Eater/Rick
FYI if you going to pretend to be a different person you have to use a different email or else it shows up on the same profile.
You should have just stayed in bed this morning.

We are different people, just using a common email. Didn't think of that ?
