Big duh: Hyundai won't build Genesis convertible

While Hyundai's 2010 Genesis Coupe is going to square off against Ford's muscular selling Mustang, Dearborn's pony will still have the convertible corner of its segment all to itself. Despite early reports to the contrary, Hyundai is insistent that going alfresco was never part of the plan for the GenCoupe. Company spokesman Miles Johnson went on to tell Inside Line that there aren't any convertibles in the works for any of Hyundai's offerings, and that the U.S. market doesn't support the sales numbers Hyundai would require to de-roof the Genesis. At least everyone got to gawk at some nice PhotoChops for a while, and there's always the aftermarket...

Not sure if they can make money off it but that chop sure looks good.

Yeah this is a big disappointment but I can see why Hyundai would be cautious in this economy. However compared to other manufacture sales numbers, Hyundai didn't fare to badly, only a 14% drop from the previous year... we just posted some sales numbers yesterday (http://genesisforums.org/misc-hyundai-news-announcements/428-hyundai-december-sales-end-year-totals.html)

I've seen a lot more Genesis' on the road recently. Hard to tell just looking at one whether or not someone has the V6 or V8 or if they have the tech package or not. But, this car does carry Lexus-like looks.
On the road however, I think the MKS looks better.
The Genesis coupe makes no sense because it looks nothing like the Genesis Sedan. They could have named it anything else.

Tiberon comes to mind. They've already established it as a performance compact, why not use the nameplate?

The Tib nameplate is reserved for a smaller, FWD sports car which is in development (if it doesn't get cancelled).
Here's the link for the Edmund's GenCoupe First Dive review -

(pretty much on par w/ what the British auto mags have been saying).

Too bad, I think that photoshop looks better than the G35 convertible.

That looks great but nooooo consumers don't want attractive cars.

It really looks like the official G37 Convertible picture, and that's a huge compliment.
However, I don't think Hyundai should have gotten ahead of itself anyway; it should wait and see how the coupe sells first before trying a convertible.

If I see another Genesis Coupe article on Autoblog without US Pricing and release date, I'm going to turn off the whole internet.

As for Gen Coupe pricing & timeline - haven't seen official pricing yet, but said to be approx $23k for the base 2.0T and $30k for the 3.8 SE. Production started in December, should be shipping later this month, arriving at the port in Feb with late Feb/early March for them to start hitting the dealerships.
