Report: Toyobaru delayed until 2012 or later

The rumors of the sports car that Toyota and Subaru were working on have been replaced by rumors that the car has been put on hold. Earlier news had posited a rear-wheel-drive sports car with "wonderful style," based on the current Subaru Legacy platform, with a boxer engine putting out around 200 hp through a six-speed manual. Originally due in 2011, now, according to Nikkei, the car has been pushed back to at least 2012. If things get worse before they get better, we have a feeling that 2012 will also come and go without Toyota fielding another dedicated sports car entrant. So move along, folks, there's nothing to see here, please return to your Camrys and cue up Queen: another one bites the dust...

Yikes keep it away. It looks like a Lexus GS mated with a Hyundai Tiburon.

Lol, this is an artist's rendering of what it *could* look like.

I thought old Tib as soon as I looked at it. LOL too funny!

Hey, cut it some slack! Toyota is boring these days and hasn't had a legitimate sports car since the MR2. Who cares if this is ugly? My hopes are that it sells on the name alone and Toyota will go back to making cars which are good for, oh, driving? Transitions can be ugly, so long as they are making good stuff in 2011.

This ought to have been stuck on the original post:
***********WARNING********
THE ABOVE IMAGE IS AN ARTIST'S RENDERING. TOYOTA AND SUBARU HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY IMAGES OF THIS CAR TO DATE!
DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT IT BEING UGLY AND BASE FUTURE OPINIONS OF THE VEHICLE ON THIS IMAGE! IT'S THE ARTIST'S FAULT, NOT SUBARU OR TOYOTA'S!
************END WARNING*********

Erik,
Which of the above comments makes any critique of Toyota or Subaru? The comments are about the image as shown - which is an ugly rendering. How does commenting on the image equate to the commenters not understanding that it is not from Toyota or Subaru?

The headlights are a mix of Porche 911 and Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.
The small inner lights look like Lexus GS. Don't need those. Maybe a panel beater could cover them over (if they aren't turn signal indicators).

of course on the flip side, 90% of the people who replied to the news of a RWD compact said that they didnt care if teh thing looked like a shih tzu puppy with its face on its butt.
Where did we all go!??!
Harrison 10:39AM (12/22/2008)
It really does look like the Ford!!!
Crackberry Addict 9:11AM (12/22/2008)

back end reminds me of a mazda 929/millenia and the side view is very Mitsubishi FTO. had this been designed in 1998 rather than 2008 it might not ave looked so bad, but who knows perhaps by the time it sees production a new wave of 90's retro will be sweeping the auto industry and cars like the Ford Taurus and Contour will be all the rage.

There has been such a huge range of concept images for this car and this set is perhaps the worst. I highly doubt it will look anything like this. In fact i think this is the first "concept" drawing of this car i saw a long time ago. As a subaru owner who is also a scion fan, im eagerly awaiting this car.

Maybe they had 2nd thoughts about a Subaru with RWD and got smart
to add AWD.

I am very disappointed, I was very much looking forward to this car to replace my RSX type S. =(

I don't think this rendering looks anywhere near as generic as your Hyundai. I went and looked at an RSX in 2002 and didn't even bother test-driving one after looking at one in person. It looked like a Civic or other generic econocar.
This shouldn't be nearly as bad - I wouldn't count on this rendering being anywhere near accurate...
