The rumors of the sports car that Toyota and Subaru were working on have been replaced by rumors that the car has been put on hold. Earlier news had posited a rear-wheel-drive sports car with "wonderful style," based on the current Subaru Legacy platform, with a boxer engine putting out around 200 hp through a six-speed manual. Originally due in 2011, now, according to Nikkei, the car has been pushed back to at least 2012. If things get worse before they get better, we have a feeling that 2012 will also come and go without Toyota fielding another dedicated sports car entrant. So move along, folks, there's nothing to see here, please return to your Camrys and cue up Queen: another one bites the dust...

I thought this vehicle was to be based on the new Impreza platform, not the ancient Legacy. That doesn't make much sense.
The new Impreza platform is a shortened Legacy platform. Which isn't ancient.

Yikes keep it away. It looks like a Lexus GS mated with a Hyundai Tiburon.

        Erik,
Which of the above comments makes any critique of Toyota or Subaru? The comments are about the image as shown - which is an ugly rendering. How does commenting on the image equate to the commenters not understanding that it is not from Toyota or Subaru?
I thought old Tib as soon as I looked at it. LOL too funny!

i know that its an artist rendering...but its ugly as sin

toyota celica hood plus sc400/300 slash toyota soarer integrated fogs simply do not mix

This ought to have been stuck on the original post:

        ***********WARNING********
THE ABOVE IMAGE IS AN ARTIST'S RENDERING. TOYOTA AND SUBARU HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY IMAGES OF THIS CAR TO DATE!

DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT IT BEING UGLY AND BASE FUTURE OPINIONS OF THE VEHICLE ON THIS IMAGE! IT'S THE ARTIST'S FAULT, NOT SUBARU OR TOYOTA'S!
        ************END WARNING*********

I am very disappointed, I was very much looking forward to this car to replace my RSX type S. =(
        • 6 Years Ago
I don't think this rendering looks anywhere near as generic as your Hyundai. I went and looked at an RSX in 2002 and didn't even bother test-driving one after looking at one in person. It looked like a Civic or other generic econocar.
This shouldn't be nearly as bad - I wouldn't count on this rendering being anywhere near accurate...

Toyota needs to go back to the drawing board w/ this.

"Wonderful Styling" LOL!! I'm about to split my gut laughing.... That design is horrible.
i though the impreza uses a modified legacy platform.

I hope the USDM Subaru model is AWD.

Toyota now officially has no vehicle in it's line up that I am interested in. They can keep their cheap torsion beams and 4 door vehicles for other customers. I'll be looking forward to the Hyundai Genesis.

Looks like a cross between the Ford Escort ZX2 and Lotus Elise up front, yeesh. Please don't use that artist rendering pic.

This is sad news though. The one car I was looking forward to gets pushed back, sigh.

      Nice Job, autoblog...

For completely clouding the issue with the picture posted.

Almost all of the comments are on the picture, not on the article. And the picture is not even slightly confirmed. Not even the most attractive hypothetical sketch.

THAT IS NOT A PICTURE OF THE CAR! It is a bad hypothetical rendering of what someone thinks it might be, not even an Subaru/Toyota insider.

Don't worry Toyota, when my MR2 will break, I'll buy a Nissan!
