VIDEO: Garage 419 pits GT-R against rented Hertz Corvette... with nitrous

The Garage 419 team is anything but conventional, so when they say they're going to race a Nissan GT-R against a $500 competitor, you know it's going to be entertaining. Host Matt Farah had the easy task of rolling to the strip in the Godzilla of street racers, with 478 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and launch control at his beck and call. Editor Gene Sanchez had the tougher task of obtaining a $500 car to challenge his co-worker. Sanchez had a couple tricks up his sleeve, though, as he rented a $200-per-day LS3 Corvette from the Hertz Fun Collection and added a bargain-basement $300 nitrous system. Unfortunately, the 'Vette was burdened with lousy run-flat tires and a six-speed slush box, but at least the yellow underdog had the crowd on its side. Does a juiced up Corvette have a chance in Hell of besting a bone-stock GT-R on a one-eighth mile drag strip? The only way to find out is by hitting the jump to see the race for yourself.

Agreed
An 1/8th mile track as a gauge of performance with AWD vs RWD is like a "beauty" contest for 300lb fat chicks.

it's just because it was at race legal... didn't realize they'd be recording, it was an interresting friday that night.

i can't believe i watched this video, i should have just turned it off once they said they were going to go at it at an 1/8th mile track. every time i hear about 8th mile tracks, i think about girls that say they're waiting till they get married to loose their viginity...
"they still make those?"

1/8th mile tracks are a good test to see who can launch a car better, I know someone with an RX8 with some bolt ons that beat a new Z06, obviously the Z06 driver sucked

Do you think Gene got the insurance?

That's like pitting a slightly moded Cobalt SS Turbo against a Mustang GT. They might have similar power ratings, but they have completely different ways of putting that power to the ground.
In other words: Stupid Comparison.

I smacked a Cobalt SS around with my AWD Explorer 5.0 on the streets

"Hey lets see how many reps these heavy weight lifters can do!!!!"
Stupid...
A stock evo 8 would have beat the vette in the 1/8 mile. wooooooo that freeway merging speed is intense!

I can vouch for the runflat tires being a serious obstacle to beating a GTR.
I raced a GTR on Wednesday night....his best time of the night was 11.8 @ 117.......my best was 12.2 @ 119.........I need drag radials!!!!!
Also, listening to the video...his g419's GTR trapped at 93 mph in the 1/8th........the GTR I raced trapped at 95 in the 1/8 and my best was 93. Launch has everything to do with it.

Keep in mind- auto tranny and run flat tires.
GatorLCA 2:35PM (12/19/2008)
I can understand the run-flat tires, but I run an auto-tranny and All Season tires and I run an 8.3 with about 80hp less than that Vette stock, minus the juice
Torrent 2:36PM (12/19/2008)
Then that guy needs to learn how to drag race. lol

1/8th mile: No way the Vette could win against a high HP AWD car.
1/4 mile: Other way around, IMHO.
'Course, I can't see the video, so I don't know how the video went.
