StudioTorino Coupetorino turns Mercedes SL into... something else

Here's what happens when a designer sees the Solstice Coupe or Miata Coupe and thinks, "If they can do it to one of those, we can surely do it to an SL." StudioTorino, in conjunction with IAAD (Istituto d'Arte Applicata e Design), has created this Coupetorino based on the Mercedes-Benz SL. Designed for the 'Turin World Design Capital 2008' event in the "Bespoke Coachwork" class, this 1:4 scale model was created by Alfredo Stola at StudioTorino and Piotr Degler Jablonski at IAAD. The idea was to transform the Mercedes SL into an exclusive coupé with Italian flair. We'd say they succeeded, although we would have preferred a hatch to gain some luggage space. If the name sounds familiar, StudioTorino is the firm that brought us the wagon-esque Maserati Cinqueporte, the comically sinister Fiat 500 based Diabolika, and the Porsche Cayman-based RK Coupe.

The designer is using a Wacom Bamboo for crying out loud! That's for hobbyists, get an Intuos or Cintiq, yeesh!

Can you please stop spamming every post with Honda. Every post that is related to a new car/design somebody will comment about how the car is like Honda...I just hate it...

Not really feeling it. I think it is reminiscent of the old W208 CLK which is not particularly attractive IMHO. I much prefer the SL coupe transformation that AMG did with the SL63 Safety Car and SL65 Black Series.

i like the original better, personally. this redesign seems too fussy.
The Wacom bamboo is basically the intuos without the pressure sensing, no?

No, the Wacom Bamboo only has 512 levels of pressure and a resolution of 2540 lpi and it doesn't offer any Tilt function at all.
Besides, at that size no professional could work. As an artist, you require a larger surface area to draw your strokes accurately, otherwise he's just noodling.
You can see in his eyes he's thinking "OMFG people will see that I use this girly little hobby bamboo, please don't post this picture, please..."
lol

It's just a tool. A great designer will be able to work with anything, it doesn't matter if it's the latest and greatest. That's my take on that anyway.

To a degree, but you can't expect a sculptor to get the same results with Playdoh as he does with Chavant clay...
The point is, why would anyone who has the option not opt for the best solution? The cost between a Bamboo and entry Intous is very small, and it's worlds apart in quality and function.

The sail panels do wonders for visibility.
