VW shows off Scirocco Study R in Bologna

Volkswagen's new Scirocco is rapidly becoming a popular canvas for customizing, and Wolfsburg itself is getting into the act. The Bologna Motor Show has been graced with the Scirocco Study R, which could be a preview of a production version called the Scirocco R20T. The Study R is a derivation of the ideas laid down by the GT24 race concept, with a sneery front end and a wing out back. The Study R is more understated in white with subdued striping, red mirrors and a nostriled hood. Power is provided by a 2.0 liter TFSI engine that twirls the cogs in a six-speed DSG gearbox. Suspension and braking systems have also been tweaked to deliver on the image's sporty promise, and a less restrictive exhaust offers some bark to underscore the bite. With the death of the R32, Volkswagen might bring the R20T to the North American market, and if it's anything like the Study R, we'll be saying R-thirty-who?

Maybe I misread the text but how come you guys didn't write anything about the 270hp power output from the same spec engine as the S3 (though with 5hp more) and that it's powering all 4 wheels...

Agreed. I'm thinking the R32 is on its way out, at least in the smaller Golf-based vehicles. There's really no need for it since the 2.0T is as efficient as it is. I don't think any real VW purist is going to complain about that either....

Its FWD actually. :) -- Rumor is that this will stick through to the production model also. And before people make ugly faces, the Scirocco is considerably lighter than the GTI at 2850 lbs. That kind of weight makes 270 hp reasonable on FWD.

Hats off to VW on this one. They've done an outstanding job making a mock-up constructed entirely out of bologna look a lot like it's a real car, made of steel, glass and rubber.

Seriously, I think this looks really good. Even the wing doesn't bother me. I like the subtle stripes too. I'm hoping more and more that this makes it to the US.
Can't make any decisions until I see the Toyobaru though...

the stripes are a homage to the Bologna 2008 Autoshow were the car is presented .. it is the flying color of Italy..

The dealers should know more, VWoA has already announced to General Managers that north america IS getting the Scirocco. Even better news, we'll be getting this vairant as well (though for that confirmation you need to go directly to VW and not a dealer :D).
Sadly it may just be DSG like the R32 but that's being discussed at current. It will be just FWD, though from what everyone is saying (EVO,CAR, Topgear) the chassis can handle it.

Finally a VW I can see myself buying. Lovin' the mean look. Hopefully VW, along with Nissan and Toyo/Sub bring all their toys to N.A. market.

New front bumper looks 1000 times better than the stock setup. It gives the car visual height and makes it look less like a smushed Rabbit.

Chase: What's your source? Everything I've read about this has stated it's 4motion and NOT fwd.
A while back they already announced that R32 was going to make way for a 4motion variant with the 2 litre tfsi instead of the legendary vr6...

Look at _this_ article. This concept is FWD.
Most sources site that the reason VW isn't going AWD on this one is because the floorpan of the scirocco doesn't support a driveshaft to the rear.

Because the car is so damn good as is. In stock 200hp, less power brake, less uber suspension, less free flowing exhaust form, it's already faster around a track than an RX-8.
As mentioned, the factory where the car is produced currently isn't set up to allow for 4motion, and the hybrid nature of the platform makes it tough as well (part MkV, part EOS, part this and that).
