At the keynote speech this morning at the LA Auto Show, the president and CEO of Nissan/Renault, Carolos Ghosn, announced a new alliance with the start of Oregon to bring electric vehicles there in 2010. The deal will see "a supply" of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) available to the city of Portland, Oregon and to support a network of EV charging stations. Ghosn said, though, that he believes making the cars is more important than getting the infrastructure out. After all, when the very first cars were sold over 100 years ago, there was no infrastructure for them. To that end, Ghosn announced that Nissan/Renault would sell ZEVs the U.S. and Japan in 2010 and they'd be available globally two years later. More details after the jump.
Two things to think about buying an EV in Oregon: first, the state is working on creating a $5,000 tax credit for electric cars and, second, there is no state sales tax in Oregon. Are all other states about to get pwned in the EV race?

Toyota recently announced a partnership with the city of Portland to test old RAV4 EVs there. We also got a tip from AutoblogGreen reader Littlejohn this morning that said: "Portland's mayor-elect Sam Adams told our class tonight that we have been selected as a city for testing of 26 minute (220v) charging electric autos from Toyota, Honda and BYD." We'll be following up on this later.

PRESS RELEASE:

THE RENAULT-NISSAN ALLIANCE AND THE STATE OF OREGON FORM ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLE PARTNERSHIP

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 19, 2008) – The Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced that Nissan and the state of Oregon are forming a partnership to advance zero-emission mobility by promoting the development of an electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Portland General Electric (PGE) also is a participant in the partnership and is working toward the development of an easily accessible and reliable network of charging stations.

The Alliance has committed to being a global leader in zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). Nissan will introduce ZEVs in the United States in 2010 and will mass market ZEVs globally two years later. Ghosn announced the Oregon agreement during an address at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

"This partnership represents a major step toward reliable zero-emission mobility in the state of Oregon," said Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Renault SA,. "Together, we are creating conditions that will encourage consumers to consider an electric vehicle as an attractive choice that is also good for the environment."

The partnership supports Oregon Gov. Theodore Kulongoski's commitment to sustainability, which includes the effort to lead the nation in establishing the infrastructure necessary for a greener transportation system.

"Today's announcement shows that a state can create economic opportunity from its commitment to a greener future and the fight against global warming," Gov. Kulongoski said. "Oregon welcomes Nissan and is pleased to help lead the way in the transition to new, greener vehicle technologies. By partnering with Nissan and Portland General Electric, we can work together to build a consistent and reliable refueling infrastructure so consumers can make the switch to electric vehicles."

As part of the agreement, Nissan has committed to make available a supply of ZEVs to the state of Oregon and work with the state to develop plans to promote the EV Charging Network. The state, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation, has committed to promote the deployment, operation and maintenance of the EV Charging Network by developing specifications for charging stations and seeking agreements with suppliers that may be used by entities such as local governments and utility companies.

The state, under Gov. Kulongoski's leadership, and Nissan are working with PGE towards the creation of the EV charging network. PGE, as part of its plug-in vehicle initiative, is striving to find innovative solutions to Oregon's transportation and energy challenges through the development of a model charging station infrastructure, as well as identifying its infrastructure needs related to vehicle-to-grid technology. Over the past several months, PGE has installed six charging stations- with the capability to charge several dozen vehicles - across the Portland and Salem areas, with more on the way.

"PGE is committed to playing a leadership role to bring this zero-emission transportation option to Oregon residents and businesses," said Peggy Fowler, CEO and president, PGE. "We look forward to sharing technical and educational information in the coming months as we grow our network of stations across the region."

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has begun ZEV initiatives in Israel, Denmark, Portugal, Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan), and with French electric utility company EDF. In the United States, the Alliance also has agreed to a ZEV partnership with the state of Tennessee the Tennessee Valley Authority, and other partners, to explore ways to promote zero-emission mobility in Middle Tennessee.

State of Oregon

Gov. Ted Kulongoski has positioned Oregon as a national leader in sustainability. In his first term, he partnered with the states of Washington and California to create the pioneering West Coast Governors Global Warming Initiative, an effort that produced regional strategies to combat global warming for the entire West Coast. He has built upon that, implementing the most ambitious renewable electricity standard in the nation, among the most aggressive alternative fuel standard in the country, and other groundbreaking policies that promote renewable energy, conservation and energy efficiency, many of which have created economic opportunities for the state of Oregon. Because of Gov. Kulongoski's commitment to a greener future, companies and citizens alike look to Oregon for green business opportunities and increased quality of life.

The gas prices this past year have seriously damaged our economy and society. We must get on with becoming energy independent. We can't take another year like this past. Jeff Wilson has a wonderful new book out about the energy crisis and what it would take for America to become energy independent. It covers every aspect of oil, what it's uses are besides gasoline, our reserves, our depletion of it. Every type of alternative energy is covered and it's potential to replace oil. He even has proposed legislative agenda's that would be necessary to implement these changes along with time frames. This book is profoundly informative and our country needs to become more informed and move forward with becoming energy independent. It is called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW.

Of course we should have started much longer ago for helping this already 'Terminal Planet' People that think we can continue to use 'Filth' for our energy needs, needs some serious 'Education in on survival'

One thing that will do my 'Heart Good' is these darn greedy giant oil companies just might go under and see how it feels to see how the working class have to live everyday of their lifes'. They have over 680 million acres on and off shore they should have/could have all this time but it appears their 'Greed' was nothing but to hurt the common tax payer.
Let them have some cake and let them and their stock holders go broke as they have forced billions of Americans to do already.'
I love the saying "Pay-Backs are a -itch"
Word has it they are shaking in their boots right now because for ONCE Americans have had enough of their filth, pollution, and darn 'Greed' driving thousands and thousand into losing their homes and going bankrupt.
I certainly won't pity the filthy polluters of the wonderful Planet we need to take care of. Goodness it does my heart good to see the difference in people and how they are demanding a cleaner future.

This is a complete steal of taxpayers money. They want to test old rav4 from stupid toyota that been working with the same specifications since 10 or more years except some battery degradation over the time. These politicians are just trying to steal energy from working peoples and toyota is on their side collaborating like a stupid servant of the common good ??? They almost kill the planet with petrol pollution and money ruin over time for all working car drivers. It's more the fault of toyota then exxon because it's toyota that choose what we put in the car to make move it and they only offer gas or diesel and they refused to put on the market many good solution to please the oil business and it's the consumer-driver that pay for these taxes.

These stupids politicians in portland oregon know exactly how the electric rav4 work and it work like said in internet, it's not a mistery. These politicians are negating the hydrogen solution that Gm, Honda and toyota said it was working and they were ready and try to kill everyone on earth with battery that don't work on par with hydrogen or even gasoline or natural gas. Battery can only applied to 1 or 2 % of working machinery like trucks, trains, ships, electrical generation, cars. By pusching battery for stupid consumers and avoiding hydrogen they protect 98% of the conventionnal petrol industry.
