Great Moments in Motorsports: Adventures in throttle cable replacement

From our friends at the Axis of Oversteer comes a story of determination, fortitude, and a healthy dose of Darwinian law.
With less than a mile left in a stage of the Ralley de Serrians in France, the throttle cable in our hero's Renault finally gives up the ghost. Does he give up? No! Does the team try to push their way to the finish? Hell no! The driver tells his co-pilot to man the wheel while he hops into the engine bay, pulls the hood over himself and then manually controls the throttle cable bracket to a heroic finish. The picture above speaks for itself, but the video after the jump tells the whole tale.

I love the part where the co-pilot straps himself in before driving.

No kidding, you can bet the driver was screaming at him "WTF are you doing?!?!? Quit wasting time putting on your seat belt!!!! I'm riding under the !#&^$ HOOD you #$#hole!!!!"
And towards the end I'm betting he was like "QUIT #%&ING UPSHIFTING!!!! You're doing like 60 and I'm riding under the #$*$&^ HOOD you !@#hole!!!!"

Most of the time I make it through the description before watching the video, but I saw this pic and said what the?... and immediately had to watch the video. I also like how the co-pilot takes care to buckle his belt. Safety first, right?

Shouldn't the navigator be holding the cable and the driver doing the driving?

If something went wrong he could have won a Darwin Award. But this is epically brave, this man's got balls!

No, because it's the co-driver who knows the route. He usually has his head down (not looking at the road), giving turn-by-turn instructions (a couple of turns *ahead*, by the way) from the pace notes.
