SEMA 2008: Carbonite SL(R) for the economic downturn

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Carbonite SL
If you were this close to purchasing an SLR but recent events concerning a guy named Lehman severely reduced your amount of disposable cash, then allow us to introduce you to the SL Carbonite. For the price of a 2003-2008 Mercedes SL, plus $47,400 for Carbonite's hood, fenders, front and rear fascias, lowered suspension and Mandrus 20-inch wheels, you can have an SL(R) for a song that's a lot less pricey than the Mercedes-McLaren. Carbonite has also said it will only build 20 of these cars per year, which means your money could get you even more exclusivity than the real thing. Of course, what your money can't do is erase the fact that you don't actually have the real thing -- but that hasn't stopped so many others... Check out the high-res gallery of doppelganger shots below.

At least it's better proportioned. Now it doesn't look like Mercedes was compensating for something...

Wish the side vents were a bit smaller, it would fit the car better. Maybe its the photo.

this kit is UTTER crap. I've been in the body panel manufacturing industry for 3 years and I've seen more accurate hot wheels. The vents are way too big, they didn't replace the rear lights, and the doors are stock. I was googling the orignal manufacturer to add some info to this point but when I found a motor trend article on this same kit it that needed to be said.
"There is now a body kit that will make you Mercedes SL resemble the achingly cool SLR while simultaneously making it less desirable than both."

If M-B had never made the SLR, and then they had designed the SL like this from the beginning, it would have been alright. But knowing this is just a so-so knock-off of the real SLR, I'd just have to point and laugh if I ever saw one.

Stop ruining nice looking out-of-production cars! Geez, people, if you can't afford an SLR, don't try so hard to fake one. Seriously, this is EXACTLY the same as those Fieroghinis and Fierraris.

If it were a SL65 underneath, it wouldn't be so bad.
Nah, it would be.

The most expensive kit car in the world... when you get right down to it. A SL is not an SLR, no matter how you cut it. (Black Series not included... that thing is its own monster, haha). And I think that if someone is willing to spend over 100k on this pos, (42k in mods, roughly 80k for the car) then you really need to open your eyes and look at everything else that money can get you.
