Loeb gets free Red Bull F1 test for fifth rally championship

Last year, Sebastien Loeb swapped his WRC Championship winning Citroen Xsara for a test in Renault's F1 car (and former Renault driver Heikki Kovalainen hopped in the Citroen). This year, Loeb's going to take a turn in Red Bull's F1 runner for a test at the Catalunya circuit on November 17th -- Red Bull also sponsors Loeb's WRC team. The difference this time: instead of a quiet get-to-know-the-car session, Loeb will be running with the other teams and drivers during an official F1 testing session. Although he'll be piloting the Renault-powered RB4 with a mission not to embarrass himself, he has no plans to vacate his Citroen rally seat. After five straight WRC championships, piloting an F1 car is just what you do in your time off, for fun. Must be nice...

And to think, just a few short years ago, he was second team behind El Matador.

Loeb is a great driver. But I think you wildly exaggerate.

Since he doesn't want that seat, can't he be more flamboyant and just show off after some hot laps? F1 needs that, IMO.

Where did I go wrong in life? When I outperform the people I work with I get a pat on the back and a smile... where are my F1 hotlaps?

i wish he would leave WRC, I'm sick of seeing his smug face. Yeah yeah you are super awesome at Ralleye, no go do something else.

I know, it sucks when you find something to do that you are best in the world at. You know what, after somebody wins a WRC title, we should ban them from the sport altogether. Eventually we'll be able to field a bunch of nervous wrecks too scared to take corners. Smugness gone!

This is great for Loeb. I hope he has a fun and safe run. I am excited to see what his times will be compared to the other Renault.

I'm sure he'll do very well. He's fantastic at WRC and does well at Le Mans too. But I find the guy so boring it's tough to cheer for him to succeed at this or anything else.

P.S. I'm stealing your girlfriend, Woody.
(Loeb always reminds me of that character. Although not quite smug, he's very matter-of-fact about how good he is at what he does.)

Maybe that's because he has 5 championships?

He was that way even before he had 5 championships. Even before he had 1.
And besides, I'm not criticizing him for it. Trying to explain it accurately is not the same as saying it's wrong.

maybe this is an attempt to outfit F1 cars for Rally events, they are losing interest in the sport after all...j/k

One of my life goals is to drive an F1 car..... it'll never happen, but hey, a guy can have his dreams :)
I'm not a big fan of Seb, but he sure can drive.
