SEMA 2008: Webb's Automotive Art Golden Submarine

Click above for high-res gallery of the Golden Submarine
While wading through the sea of Flexes in the Ford booth we noticed this unique hot rod that looks like it could be the Foose Coupe's grandfather. Built by Webb's Automotive Art in Burton, MI, the car is a modern interpretation of the 1917 Golden Submarine race car that was raced by driving legend Barney Oldfield. It features an all-aluminum body and Ford Racing Zetec ZX3-spec alcohol crate engine producing 175 horsepower. We especially love the interior with the woven leather seat and the driveshaft position between the driver's legs. Check out the gallery of high resolution photos in the gallery below.

Maybe I'm retarded, but I can't figure out how the front suspension works. Awesome ride!

It looks like solid front axle. Think like an old stage coach.

It could have coil-overs running longitudinally from the smaller inboard brackets, the other pivot point being the wider brackets with bushings outboard.

But then again, it's probably unsprung.

There are two leaf springs that tie into the strait axle. the leafs run front to back not side to side
shawn 7:25PM (12/19/2008)
they are called quarter elipticals (the longitudinal half leaf springs)

Love it!
Off topic, but the crate Zetec reference got me thinking -- does Dodge/Mopar offer an SRT4 Crate motor?

Amazing how close the original is, compared to this modern interpretation. Just think how far ahead the original was back in 1917.
Here is the link to Harry Miller's original golden submarine.

That does look like the drive shaft but i believe the draft shaft is contained in a torque tube which runs underneath the driver.

Awesome... but for some reason i can't stop thinking it is a big aluminium wheeled coffin...

Almost looks like something Grandpa Munster would drive.

It is a piece of automotive art, but I cannot help but chuckle at the steering wheel, it looks like they lifted it from a bus.

With that Milleresque radiator surround, I expect front wheel drive.

no rear wheel drive with the torque tube running under the driver as previously mentioned. you cant see it but the torque tube runs to a unit that transfers the power from the low torque tube up to the differential. really sweet setup to see in person.
