We're not going to tell you who won yesterday's season finale at the Brazilian Grand Prix. We'll leave that to Noah in his usual race recap. What we will tell you is that Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a scandal-ridden season that saw his McLaren team excluded from the championship in 2007 to capture this year's World Drivers Championship. That makes Hamilton the youngest F1 champion ever in only his second year as part of the grand prix circus. British-born Hamilton won the title 67 days before his 24th birthday. With five wins in 2008, he successfully managed to avoid the sophomore jinx. Hopefully he won't follow in the footsteps of Jacques Villeneuve and abandon a successful team for a startup with lots of money and zero success. The really big question for Lewis now is will he acknowledge that he is in fact the Stig? Thanks to Richard for the tip!

Almost choked again. Definitely, he's not the legend in the making many want to believe he is. Champion or not.

I couldn't agree more with you. I am unimpressed by Hamilton's drive on Sunday. He owes his win purely to Timo Glock making a mistake. To those that say that Timo was slowing down and was destined to lose positions, Hamilton was actually the one slowing. Vettel was pulling away from him significantly before Glock lost traction. Also, Lewis couldn't pass 2 guys that have been significantly slower than him all year when it mattered most (Vettel and Glock).
Congrats Lewis, but all I have to say is next year, not only do you have Massa to worry about, but Vettel too. He had your number also this race and will surely make you earn your money next year.

It felt really crap watching the end, as a Ferrari fan, but as a motorsports fan, that was one of the most exciting races I've seen, not just because of what was at stake.

And AB, do you really need someone to tip you on this???
oh man. what's with these spoilers? now i've avoid your website every racing weekend just so that i can watch the races without having known the results beforehand.

Does this mean he will get the last produced McLaren F1 as promised at the start of the season? Or was that last season?
That was only if McLaren also won the WCC.

      Hey, I'm The Stig

Lets be honest...great race, but in reality (and not with FIA technicalities), Hamilton had the championship sewn up after China due to the following 2 reasons:

      1) Belgian GP: FIA gives Hamilton a 25 second penalty and therefore takes away 4 points for making a perfectly legal pass.

      2) Chinese GP: Raikonen lets Massa pass which according to FIA (not me) is illegal, but FIA does nothing (worth another 2 points). The SPEED TV commentators had fun with this one.
It was not illegal for Raikonen to let Massa pass, Its would of been illegal if the team told him to let massa pass. It was the same in this race with alanso letting massa pass him

It was a great finish. It is disappointing that the outcome was determined by a driver on a team that can hardly compete for wins.

But Hamilton did earn this championship, and this gift he received is perhaps fair compensation for the bizarre steward rulings against him.

      Super great race!!
However.... The Toyota stunt at the end really really makes me question the outcome. I find it extremely hard to believe both drivers lost 15+ seconds in the last few turns of the race when the conditions were unchanged from the previous lap.
      What are everyone's thoughts ???
Either way... both FM & LH deserve the title... great season.
Yeah Vettel is free from any suspicion. (and I thought he did rather well)
However that Toyota, I dunno but it seemed iffy to me also and I wanted Hamilton to win. But it's kind of bitter sweet because of the Toyota. If it's tires then ok (he was running hard ones on the wet track from what I remember), I'm just waiting on an analysis on that race.

I'm really surprised that some people actually think Glock deliberately let Hamilton pass. Think about it:

Glock is running in P7 when it begins to rain, while Hamilton is running in P4. Glock gambles and stay out on the dry tires moving himself up to P4, only to hand it back to Vettel & Hamilton on the final lap? If he wanted to ensure Hamilton's championship all he would've had to do was pit for wet tires like everyone else. It was a strategic gamble (which did pay off, since he still ended up finishing P6 instead of P7).
It'd be impossible to prove due to the radically changed conditions.

Also, I don't think Kimo lifted, as if you check the final race stats, from the time he was passed by Hamilton to the finish line, he dropped 6 whole seconds...meaning he just didn't have the power.

What huge drama to end a race and a championship chase. Bravo to Vettel for not just riding around behind Hamilton the last couple of laps.

Toyota just rolled the dice that they could maintain their position with Glock but the rain was just too much. I couldn't believe it when I saw Hamilton pass him coming out of that last turn.

Massa did everything he could and you could tell he was very emotional at the end. I heard interviews earlier where Massa and Hamilton were asked to make comments about the other driver as a person and they were both very complimentary about each other. I think they do have a pretty good friendship and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't share some good hearted conversation in private several hours after the race.

it was a great race. pins and needles the last 2 laps. even though i don't believe tima had orders, so what if he did. the buddy system not only exist in nascar but in all sports. remember when alonso said he would help massa in any way he could. well, i guess it just wasn't enough! well done hamilton, well done!
In the last lap the rain was substantially stronger. Both Toyotas where on slicks . Nothing strange here. In fact, avoiding pit-stop Glock gained P6.
It was a little bizarre... but the conditions were iffy. Even if they were unchanged from the previous lap, he could have lost a lot of time at that same spot at each lap, we don't know that for sure. I just couldn't believe Vettel got by and pulled away.

Kidos to Hamilton. A truly great driver.
Hamilton a real champion? Vettel owned him easily.
True that. But i would love to see Vettel in a competitive car next year. Unfortunately he will be with Red Bull.
Oh I definitely agree Vettel is going to be great. He'll be fun to watch in the next few years, Red Bull or not...
from your couch perspective maybe, but lap traffic was involved and both the McLaren team and Lewis very openly and obviously were running conservatively all around to secure the championship.
Bravo Hamilton. You are a phenomenal driver. You deserved this.

Bravo to Ferrari for winning the constructors championship.

This is the exact result I predicted and hoped for the whole season! Never did I expect it to be THIS close.

I feel really bad for Massa's family who started celebrating, only to have their hopes SHATTERED seconds later!
yeah, great, great title chase. I love the sporting attitude of massa and hamilton and it was a horrible scene in the ferrari pits when they found out massa had not won. but again, these 2 are friends and have a sporting relationship with family involved. i think the champianship revolved around the two it should have revolved around this year. what a season, what a race!
Anybody remember that Vettel was in an STR-Ferrari? Also, if Glock really wanted to lose to Hamilton, he could have just stopped to get rain tires along with everyone else. He gambled, it almost paid off and it almost cost Hamilton a championship. I'm sure if it had paid off he would have gotten the worlds biggest thank you note from Massa! Fantastic last lap. Everything you could ever want in a single lap but I can't imagine how crazy it would have been has Felipe pulled it off in Brazil of all places. Total mayhem.
