Toyota's marketing team has released the first image of the next-gen Prius, and it's not what you think. The shot shows what appears to be the welcome screen that will appear on the car's in-dash screen upon startup, and the font looks curiously like the same one used by the new Knight Rider series on NBC. We doubt this means Prius v3.0 will have Turbo Boost built in, but it will have a larger four-cylinder gas engine and more powerful electric motor. Unfortunately, the new Prius is expected to carry over its nickel-metal hydride batteries rather than going with new lithium-ions, at least for now. The 2010 Toyota Prius will be making its first public appearance at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January, and we'll be there to greet the new green king in person. Thanks for the tip, Danny!

The reason toyota isn't switching to lithium batteries is because they just invested a large amount of money in nickel-metal hydride batteries. I doubt they will switch any time soon.

As long as the Prius is not actually televising the new Knight Rider episodes in the car, then everything will be fine.

They stole a model name and then a whole brand from the movie "The Matrix". This font thing....pretty minor.

Only because Warner Bros. has lawyers.

Toyota uses "Scion" which means "descendant" - as in Toyota's youthful offspring.

The Matrix's "Zion" is a Biblical reference to the Promised Land.

To violate a trademark they'd have to be goods or services competing in the same market such that it would be "confusingly similar" the end consumer.

That's why you can have a movie and a car that share the Matrix name.

Is the WB selling a line of Zion cars?

I'm sure the Prius will out live the new Knight Rider series.
this is the same font, the only difference is that the capital letters in Knight rider have been enlarged for a more dramatic effect, but same font.
If you look at the Rs, you'll see that the Prius R is rounded while the Knight Rider R is squared. The leg of the R in Knight Rider is angled, while the leg of th R in Prius is curved on it's back side. The Prius font has vertical elements that are wider than the horizontal elements while the Knight Rider's font has uniform line weights. Also, the top line on the P and R in the Prius font extend beyond the vertical element and are beveled. The R in Knight Rider is flush to the vertical element and squared off.

I'm not a font designer, but I work with graphical layout and work with fonts every day and I don't think they're even in the same font families.

They also stole the color scheme... that does it im dumping my Prius for a Mustang.

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" may have something to say about Knight Rider's font claim.

NEWFLASH: Fonts are Public Domain items, so while it's legal to use the same font used by the iconic Coca-Cola brand, ya can't exactly slap "Coca-Cola" in that trademark font on Beer cans and sell it.
        NEWSFLASHIER:
There's nothing public domain about fonts. They're the property of the company or artist that designs them. Unfortunately in the US, the actual style of the typeface isn't well protected by the law (the law is more protective of the name) and fonts are mercilessly copied and rebadged by others as their own, leaving the real artist with little to no legal recourse.

        WRONG!!

While Coca-Cola can trademark the Coca-Cola Logo, they can't trademark the fonts.

Do you guys have so little to write about that you make stuff up?

I can plainly see that's not the same font, and wondering how come you can't.
Yeah, no kidding: THIS JUST IN!

"New Prius uses generic, 'futuristic' font pioneered in 80's by Blade Runner, Terminator"

        Give me a break, guys.
I see only the "I" shares the same font.

I contributed at least 5 tips last week to Autoblog.....none of them made it from what I can see.

The only one I can remember offhand was Fiat making a special edition Fiat 500 Homage from the Hayao Miyazaki movie Castle of Colligstro driven by Monkey Punch's Lupin III.

While I won't go into detail, the only letter you can compare between the two fonts is the R and there are many differences between the two, like the shape of the curve and the way the / starts the R in PRIUS. Just look for yourselves, these are not the same font.
It's different, but not much...OK, you're right...the Prius used the bold button...otherwise, very similar

2 seconds comparing the two fonts and I have noticed at least 7 differences.

      Not the same font.

They both stole it from Terminator:
      http://www.1001fonts.com/font_details.html?font_id=2556

It's a generic "futuristic" typeface with minor modifications.
