VIDEOS: The Goodwrench Report with Stephen Colbert

Our sides were still hurting from the Bob Lutz interview on the Colbert Report when we read through the GM vice-chairman's thoughts on having appeared alongside the pseudo news anchor, whom he referred to as a "comic genius". We managed to stop laughing long enough to note of Lutz's recollection that Colbert had done a series of television commercials for the automaker's service division, Goodwrench. The ads were done just a few years ago, when Colbert was still on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart before he had his own program. They weren't bad, and we've got a couple of the clips after the jump for your entertainment.

The fact that Lay Leno will retire next year and this Colbert guy will be one of the "funnier" guys on TV really makes me sad.

Colbert is way funnier than Leno is. It's all about O'Brien, Stewart, and Colbert.

All those years, and Colbert STILL doesn't know exactly WHO Mr. Goodwrench is!!!

The man is a comical genius, by far my favorite comedian.

But his whole thing is that Neo Conservative Republican. Look at Jay Leno, smart witty jokes, that is why he is who he is.
Now once Bush leaves the office this neo con thing will wear off. As far as Conan O'Brian, he just isn't funny at all--------My personal opinion.

You hope it'll wear off when Bush leaves but don't bet on it.

Colbert and Stewart are brilliant. I can't wait to watch Colbert play the beaten down, dejected Republican after the election. I'm sure he'll spin whatever happens perfectly in his direction.

If by some miracle Obama wins then Colbert can play the republican attack dog for 8 years.

tankd0g, why turn this into political discussion?
I remember these commercials and I thought they were annoying... and they are still pretty neutral to me. The Daily Show will have a MUCH easier time adjusting after the election, since their aim isn't to make fun of Republicans - it's to make fun of all politics and news.

I've always been a pretty big fan of Colbert since the daily show but have to admit, the Colbert Report only works for me most of the time. The stuff between him and Stewart is usually gold.

I remember these, although I had no idea who he was at the time. Pretty cool.

@Karl
You are kidding, right? Stewart wears his liberal bias on his sleeve more than anyone on television. He's as funny as anyone, but his political commentary annoys me--not because I disagree with him, but because he is an ass about it. Colbert we all know is poking fun at the neocon, but he does it with backhanded commentary and still manages to make the Democrats look like idiots every once in a while.
Colbert>Stewart.

Colbert should go to a NASCAR race and interview the fans.

Would someone PLEASE tell me how this cocky little wimp is perceived as "funny"? I remember as kids we would kick the asses of guys like this because of their attitudes. The Goodwrench commercials were annoying at best. Put him on Bill O'Reilly and let's have some REAL fun watching him squirm. Lutz must REALLY be trying to push GM to subject himself to such lameness.

Um...Colbert HAS been on 'The O'Reilly Factor'. And Bill O'Reilly has been on 'The Colbert Report'. They guested each others shows during the same week this past spring.
Get out more...or rather...stay in.
guybot 12:27PM (9/22/2008)
He was on O'Reilly and he definitely wasn't squirming. Not sure how to link but you can see it on youtube.

"They weren't bad," No, they were hideous. No fault of Colbert, but the incredibly lame concept and writing.
