BMW makes 2.1% price increase official
BMW made it official today, after we told you about it "unofficially" last week. As expected, the German automaker is raising prices across its model range an average of 2.1 percent for the 2009 model year due to "...significant structural and economic changes in the marketplace." Regardless, the direct price increase of vehicle MSRP doesn't tell the whole story. BMW has also increased pricing on popular options (the Sport Package is up $450 on the 335i sedan and coupe) and removed some standard features (the premium Logic 7 audio system is no longer standard on the 335i -- now it's an $875 option) driving the consumer's cost even higher than it initially appears. If that isn't bad enough news for those hoping to put a Roundel in their driveway, we are also hearing rumors that BMW's latest lease residuals and money factors aren't as sweet as they were over the summer. Check out all the pricing details in BMW's press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE
BMW Announces 2009 Model Year Pricing
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - August 25, 2008... BMW of North America, LLC today announced a price increase of 2.1 percent on average across its model range of 2009 BMW brand vehicles.
The modest price adjustment is driven mainly by continually rising raw materials costs and ongoing exchange rate pressure.
"The significant structural and economic changes in the marketplace are prompting all automakers to further refine actions to respond to these pressures," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. "At BMW, we're responding with a number of internal efficiency improvements to offset our increased costs so that we can keep this price increase modest."
Model year 2009 vehicles are due to arrive at dealerships in October. Minor price adjustments will also be made to selected options/packages. There is no 2009 pricing on Z4 Roadsters and Coupes as production concludes at the end of the 2008 model year.

Who cares. Once the Cadillac "CTC" comes out, who needs a Bimmer anymore

Those who know what makes BMW cars worthwhile.

ROFL what's that? Overpriced badge that depreciates like hot cakes and is no special than corolla because every fool has it? Caddy CTS FTW
azzo45 10:44PM (8/26/2008)
Yeah BMW is simply an overpriced badge & depreciates ...WTF are you smokin' X1???
Have you priced low mileage M3's or numerous other BMWs... ??? As for non branded BMW's...
...My 04 Mini Cooper S was bought new for $23,500... I sold it 3 years later for $19,000. After the factory warranty had expired no less.
BMW builds & engineers very good stuff. They have proved their worth for decades... lets see if Cadillac can maintain their "new" image as long as BMW has

I am such an idiot. I had an 08 1-series scheduled for Sept. delivery but pushed it back because I thought it would be smart to wait for an 09. Oh well, hindsight and all that.

Well, look on the bright side. You won't have to look at the craptastic marketing gimmick around the ignition button every single day. "Year one of the 1"

So the value to price ratio will decrease even further across the whole BMW lot. Great. But, I'm afraid, there will be still enough people lured by myths about BMW's image of reliability who'd go out and tell themselves afterwards that they are really satisfied customers.
Anyway, will that also affect Mini? They used to charge some ridiculous money for things like a glovebox, in Britain anyway.

And exactly what is this price hike going to do? Make them more attractive?

Sure makes Asian luxury cars look a helluva lot more attractive.

I was told by a friend: "thou shalt not buyeth a BMW". Lease a BMW.

Not in Texas. We pay lease taxes on the entire amount of the car not just the lease portion.
PiCASSO 1:19PM (8/27/2008)
Same applies here for Illinois. You pay 100% of the taxes, even though your payments (with the including the interest) are for the depreciation. Then when you want to buy back the car (say due to high milage), you pay taxes on the residual amount. Therefore, for a car that depreciates 50% in 3-years, you may end-up paying 150% in taxes. Yay!
Bottom line, leasing isn't very attractive here in Illinois... worse yet in Chicago, where they slap on another Chicago tax on top of the monthly payments.
My thoughts on BMWs... I've heard too many horror stories about the reliability of BMWs. My friend's X3 went through the shop enough times that he can't wait to get rid of it, even at a huge depreciated loss. No one that I know has kept their BMW beyond the warranty period, as the costs of maintanance are high on a car the requires regular trips to the dealership.

So after inflation, prices are actually ~2% cheaper! yay!

Why not pick up a 2003 M5 for $35k, or a 330i ZHP for $23k?

I've been tracking BMW prices for about a year now. 328xi 4- and 2-door are both up exactly $1000 (base price), and destination is up $50. Increased destination is not unique to BMW of course, it's getting close to $1000 on some cars!

So car companies raise prices and make leases less attractive and affordable. I guess the used car market nad CPOs will be the best way to get luxury cars for those of us without large wallets. ('course, my CPO Audi should serve me for a while)

At least the prices are still far far far cheaper than every single other place in the world. In Australia a 335i costs $120,000 on road for instance, M5 is $260,000 etc.
