The Gumpert Apollo may not be able to drive over a speed bump, but it sure is fast on the track. Top Gear's most recent episode included a review of the German supercar by Richard Hammond and a Power Lap on the Top Gear Test Track in the hands of the Stig. The result was quite impressive: a time of 1:17.1 that eclipsed the previous best mark of 1:17.3 set by the Ascari A10. Follow the jump to watch the two-part video.

Yeah its amazing but they cut a lot of corners to pull it off - this thing is basically a carbon fiber race car in the shape of a road legal vehicle.
There should be a distinction made between these super light bare bone racecars and what I think is a true supercar.
I think for it to be called a supercar it should be crazy fast, handle like a race car but still retain all the features you get with a road going car like airbags, usable traction control, adjustable seats, AC, power windows etc
Just my opinion.

The project is lead by former Audi Motorsport cheif Roland Gumpert and they work together with MTM and with race technology supplyer Nitec Engineering. The team formed around the Gumpert project are highly experiend race engineers... Roland Gumpert was part of the team that won 4 WRC Group B Worldchampionships for Audi.
They exactly know what they do in the little Gumpert factory..

Andrew, by your definition the Ferrari F40 isn't a supercar. :|
MKIV @ Aug 9th 2008 5:27PM
They were giving this car a hard time about it's look but I like the styling...
Daniel @ Aug 9th 2008 6:04PM

Conor @ Aug 9th 2008 6:46PM
Agreed. I love this car. And that ending... wow. Real comedy. :D

I know TG has the 'sleeping policeman' test, did this pass?
They have had faster cars that have not gone on the board because they could not clear a speedbump.
Beastage @ Aug 9th 2008 6:17PM
There were news right in on autoblog about a stuck Gumpert in the US , it got stuck on a speed bump , I recall the news reported it was the version with the adjustable suspension.
tankd0g @ Aug 9th 2008 7:02PM
I can only assume that because you can adjust the ride height (with wrenches) they allowed it, but personally I don't think it should be on the board if the DBR9 wasn't allowed.
Mobius_1 @ Aug 9th 2008 9:05PM
The Power Lap board is ruined anyways, why worry :P
But yeah, if any of you recall the three's trip to the Millau Bridge in 3 supercars, then many cars, especially those heading the board, can be disqualified for being hopeless in day-to-day situations
arturo @ Aug 9th 2008 5:36PM
this is old news since it was a week ago this happen. this is a car that no matter how good of a track car it is, it doesnt impress me.
Hike15 @ Aug 9th 2008 5:37PM
can the ascari get over speed bumps?
cause knowing the top gear boys they will be bias and choose the britiish cars...so if this cant get over speed bump and the ascari doesnt koenigsegg is #1!
The Doctor @ Aug 9th 2008 8:41PM
They showed the Ascari's rising front suspension just before putting it on the board.
Dasupersprint @ Aug 9th 2008 8:58PM
From what I heard Koenigsegg is still Swedish.

I'm delighted to be back in last week! Or was it two?
Franz @ Aug 9th 2008 5:46PM
I particularly loved Richard Hammond's tire smoking, fish tailing standing start in this car. What a sight that was.
