Nissan confirms G37 Sedan, G37 Convertible and G37x Coupe

Click above for high-res gallery of the G37 Coupe
Nissan has finally confirmed in writing what many of us had known all along... the 2009 model year will bring the new G37 Sedan, G37 Convertible, and the G37x Coupe to Infiniti showrooms. The G35 sedan gets a bump from 3.5-liters (306 hp) to 3.7-liters (328 hp) as it now shares its engine with the coupe. Rebadged the G37, an optional brake package adds 4-piston front/2-piston rear brakes and larger rotors to the sedan. A new 18-inch wheel design and standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing) round out the upgrades. The all-new G37 convertible marks Infiniti's first drop-top since the 1992 M30 was discontinued, and the first open-air G. Based on the G37 Coupe, it features a three-piece automatic retracting hardtop. Finally, the new G37x is a G37 coupe fitted with Nissan's ATESSA E-TSÔ all-wheel drive system. While the G37 Sedan and G37x will go on sale in September and debut in less than two weeks at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, we'll have to wait until the LA Auto Show in November for the debut of the G37 Convertible. Of course, Autoblog will be at both events to cover it for you.

INFINITI ELEVATES 2009 G LINEUP WITH INSPIRIN
When you have a vehicle line – say the Infiniti G – that has chalked up award after award, topped comparison test after comparison test, and endeared itself to a growing legion of passionate owners, what do you do for an encore? If you happen to be a world-class performance luxury brand – say like Infiniti – the answer is simple: Everything. The popular Infiniti G roars into the 2009 model year with an extensive array of changes, including:
- The addition of an all-new Infiniti G37 Convertible model, slated to launch in the first quarter of 2009
- A new 328-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine for the Infiniti G Sedan – now designated the G37 Sedan
- A new all-wheel drive model for the Infiniti G Coupe, the G37x
- A new 7-speed automatic transmission for all Infiniti G models (6-speed manuals transmissions also available)
"A little success makes you want to try harder. A lot of success makes you want to blow the doors off the competition again – which we're poised to do with the new, intensified Infiniti G lineup for 2009," said Ben Poore, Infiniti's vice president of marketing. "Year after year we strive to offer our customers one of the freshest product lineups in the industry – which we've done again in 2009 with the new second-generation Infiniti FX, upcoming G Convertible and the enhanced G37 Coupe and G37 Sedan."
2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible
The all-new G37 Convertible, the first-ever open-air G, is set for a mid-2009 model year introduction. Based on the current G37 Coupe, the G Convertible promises stunningly seductive styling and G-worthy dynamic performance. The new G37 Convertible will feature a three-piece automatic retracting hardtop, to keep a coupe-like roofline, and available unique interior treatment. Audio and HVAC systems have been enhanced to provide an inviting experience with the top up or down. The all-new Infiniti G37 Convertible is set to make its world debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
2009 Infiniti G37 Sport Sedan
The Infiniti G premium high-performance sport sedan receives a significant upgrade under the skin in 2009 with the addition of a new VQ37VHR "VVEL" 3.7-liter V6 rated at 328 horsepower. It is mated to a new 7-speed automatic transmission or close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.
Now designated as the Infiniti G37 Sedan, other major changes include new available sport brakes with 4-piston front/2-piston rear calipers and large 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors, a new sport 18-inch wheel design and standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing clearcoat finish).
The 2009 G37 Sedan is available in four models – G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT and G37x AWD. It goes on sale in September 2008.
2009 Infiniti G37 Sport Coupe
For 2009, the G37 Coupe's performance envelope expands with the addition of a new G37x AWD model with advanced ATESSA E-TSÔ all-wheel drive system. Also new for 2009 is a 7-speed automatic transmission with Drive Sport (DS) Mode and Downshift Rev Matching (the G37 Coupe is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission).
All 2009 G37 Coupes receive standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing clearcoat finish). The 2009 G37 Coupe is available in four models – G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT and G37x AWD – each with standard 330-horsepower 3.7-liter VQ-series V6 with VVEL technology. It goes on sale in September 2008.

Look at this one:
The G37 Convertible is going to be drop-dead gorgeous IMO.

Eh... I like the G35 coupe, it looks clean, strong, and purposeful. The G37 looks more generic, wavy, and boring.
why not the LS2LS7? 12:07PM (8/06/2008)
Wait? The LS430 disappears and Infiniti brings out a convertible again?
Is there some kind of rule that only one of Lexus or Infiniti can make a convertible?
At least Ice Cube/Spike Jonze' rant in Three Kings is factually accurate again.

You do mean the SC, right? Because the LS is the falgship of the entire lineup and is a 4-door sedan, not a convertible.
Also, the LF-A will show up in dealers hopefully (knock on wood) by the end of next year. A convertible will follow suit. The way I look at it is that the Infiniti G37c (?)will still be on sale by then and for a while after.
why not the LS2LS7? 12:47PM (8/06/2008)
Shoot. You're right. I mean SC430.
I don't actually believe in the LF-A.
styleguy 12:08PM (8/06/2008)
I'd buy one over a 335i any day.

Wow what perfect timing. I made reference in the Ford Flex post yesterday that some vehicles look better in person, when compared to their press photos. This one, on the other hand, to me, looks better in print. The weird, cartoonish curves on this thing are not flattering at all, especially on the sedan. The coupe has too many visual similarities with the Altima - not enough to justify the near-$20k-price hike it'll likely command. The wood inserts in the interior remind me of 1970s wood paneling used in homes.

you need glasses then, this car looks fantastic in pics and person
maybe you never seen real wood used on a car before, maybe you're used to that wood looking like laminate that comes in most cars.
I love the fact that infiniti did not go overboard with coating the wood, in most cars it makes the wood look like laminate in a lot of cases.
anf hte Flex looks just like a box in real person, though the interior is very nice and I'd still choose it over the Oddessy/Sienna and all other minivans (I can't see the Flex going up against the Acadia for some reason, I see it more liek a minivan than anything else)

Like vintage said above - I too prefer the previous-generation to the current one. The designers went too far - the vehicle's edges are too curvy and feminine.
Maybe I'll grow to like the coupe, but the sedan is a lost cause, especially with that gross chrome decklid on certain models. Remember when the original G35 debuted with that weird center-mounted rectangle-encased Infiniti logo? That lasted what, six months? This is a great platform and a decent car, but, like the 3 Series, it too has had its fair share of styling miscues.
As for the wood trim, I've never had it. My last car has aluminum trim and my current one has carbon fiber. Never been a fan of wood in cars. Or on walls in houses. :)

Matt-
"The coupe has too many visual similarities with the Altima"
Gee, that might make sense considering that the G37 is just a rebadged Altima Coupe.
You're right though. It needs to look a little more different than its coupe brother.
Ligor 12:10PM (8/06/2008)
ok,
I likethe upgrade, but what about $$
I think Infiniti needs to bring about a smaller model and have it start at $28.5k. of course it better be RWd adn about 400lbs lighter than the G.
I like my 03 G35 auto right now, but I do feel that it's missing a gear especially when traveling over 65mph, the rev's should loose about 300-400rpm or so

That's where the 350Z comes in.

so seeing as how ATESSA ET-S is the same AWD system as on the (old) GT-Rs (probably R32, newer ones are ATESSA ET-S Pro I believe), could the G37x coupe have similar at the limit driving behavior as the GT-R?
ATESSA ET-S is rear biased, but once the rears starts sliding, power is moved to the fronts as well, giving the effect of being "pulled out" of an oversteer situation naturally.
This is one of the reasons why the GT-R (older ones too) are so great, and would be fantastic to have on any car. But since there already was a G35x at some point and no review ever mentioned anything positive about that, is this incarnation of ATESSA ET-S not set up like the GT-Rs or something (maybe more front biased?)

why not the LS2LS7? 12:16PM (8/06/2008)
There's nothing awesome about the driving dynamics of the G35x. And the AWD system may be sophisticated, but so was Quadra-Drive on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
In the end, I don't think the G35x/G37x is ever going to garner comparisons to a Skyline because it's only available with a slushbox (torque-converter) automatic.
why not the LS2LS7? 12:19PM (8/06/2008)
Oh. Here's the Quadra-Drive link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_four_wheel_drive_systems#Quadra-Drive_.28WJ.29
Rear-biased and with full left to right limited-slip differentials (and not that fake electronic crap either!).
Fearless Fred 12:26PM (8/06/2008)
huh? what does a "slushbox" have to do with driving dynamics? If I am cornering, it doesn't matter whether I am driving a manual in 3rd gear, or whether I have an auto (with semi-manual controls, which any sporty car has) held in 3d gear, they will both have identical at the limit behavior.
I know the G35x wasn't great. That's exactly what I am asking... giving that it has the GT-Rs AWD system, WHY isn't it any better?
why not the LS2LS7? 12:38PM (8/06/2008)
Fearless Fred:
Note the paragraph break in there.
I made two different points.
1. The G35x doesn't drive like a Skyline, or indeed special at all.
2. It has a slushbox.
Neither of those is likely to make you say "OMG, this car is a Skyline in disguise!".
I looked for details, there's no info on the ATTESA system used in the G35x. Yes, it has the same name, but then again Audi uses quattro to refer to two wildly different systems too.
Can you even find info that says the G35x even has a limited slip diff in the rear? I can't. It's too bad companies aren't more forthcoming about how their AWD systems work.
