Shaq buys smart fortwo, wears as shoe

Standing seven feet and one inches tall and weighing in at 375 pounds, Shaquille O'Neal is one big dude. Must drive a big 'ol car then, right? Umm, not exactly. The Phoenix Suns star center has recently been spotted in his newest automotive purchase, a smart fortwo. Seriously. And, surprisingly enough, he fits! Don't believe us? See above for photo proof. Well, so he sorta fits. It's a good thing that Shaq opted for the convertible, as his head comes up several inches over the top of the windshield. Oh, and we can find no real proof that the door has ever completely shut with Shaq inside. Just sayin'.

Funny. The Smart marketing department should have broken off a telephone to this guy by now.

There's no way that car can move with him in it....

That's not true, put him and the Smart car on a steep hill and watch that puppy rocket downward!!! Hope those things have good brakes!

Kinda reminds me of the old old OLD VW commercial with Kareem Abdul Jabbar (not sure if that was who it was...) stuffing himself into a Beetle to show that it was somewhat spacious.

That might have been Wilt Chamberlain and a VW rabbit. Kareem may have done something like that with a Beetle, but I do remember the Chamberlain commercial.

I remember that commercial(from the '60s). It wasn't Kareem(at the time known as Fredrick Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr.). It was Wilt Chamberlin.

More proof that:
A. O'Neil is an idiot. Only a fool would buy a car for 14 grand with a 2 year warranty that gets almost the same mpg as a honda civic (regular or hybrid) yet only carries 2 and almost no luggage.
B. Money doesn't buy brains.

I doubt he cross-shopped with cars that get better mileage and have better warranties.
It's called pocket change + somewhat new and cool + impulse shopper.
This happens when you earn something north of $300,000 PER GAME!!

When you have millions on top of mi8llions of doallars to spare, there is no such thing as a bad purchase. Shaq makes enough to buy 10 Smarts in a game.
Ricky 6:06PM (8/05/2008)
I think you're the idiot who actually thinks Shaq bought that car for practical reasons. It's obviously a Joke.

try living someplace where street parking is very very scarce and garage/lot parking is very very expensive.
In those places, the smart is GOLDEN.
Plus it is the only car under $20k that has the engine in the proper place, behind the driver.

Not sure who the idiot is Ihoh, because the Smart gets 30% better mileage than the Civic. The base Civic costs 25% ($4k) more than the base Smart, and has nearly identical cargo space.
Fuel:
Civic = 26/34
Smart = 33/41
(source fueleconomy.gov)
Price:
Base Civic DX = $15, 600
Base Smart - $11,600
(source: Edmonds.com
Cargo space:
Civic = 12 cubic ft
Smart = 12 cubic ft
(the civic has a rear seat for passengers and can be used for cargo)
The Civic is a very nice car, but I can't remember the last time I carried a rear seat passenger.
PS: I drive a Volvo that gets 25% less mileage than the Civic.

Erm, your money? No. Plus, what happens if he just wants a small town car? Nothing wrong with a Smart. He bought it because he wants it. Simple.
VP 5:20PM (8/05/2008)
Let me actually see a pic with him driving it. I don't think he would actually fit wholly in that thing.

Honda Civic DX headroom: 39.4 inches, Civic DX legroom: 42.2 inches, Civic DX shoulder room: 53.7 inches, Civic DX hiproom 51.9, Civic DX cargo volume: 12 cubic feet
smart fortwo pure headroom: 39.7 inches, fortwo legroom: 41.2, fortwo shoulder room: 48 inches, fortwo hiproom 45.5, fortwo cargo volume: 12 cubic feet. If only Shaq weren't so wide, the smart would be the better choice. With the smart's soon-coming stop-start technology (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/11/all-smarts-to-get-start-stop-standard/) its efficiency will improve to 36/44 mpg compared to the Civic's 25/36mpg. None of which helps justify a smart for Shaq.
