Spy Shots: 2010 Mercedes E-Class

Click above for high-res gallery of the new E Class from Automotive Traveler.
Our friend Rich Truesdell over at Automotive Traveler just sent us some pics of the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E Class that he shot in the desert. While there's still a bit of camo on it, you can clearly see a lot of the new sheetmetal. The car is rumored to be making its official debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show next September, but the final form appears to be set. It looks like the S-Class wheel arches haven't made it to the new E, which resembles M-B's C Class instead. It's handsome, but nothing revolutionary. While there were no badges or underhood shots to confirm it, Rich suspects this to be a mid-level V8 model based on the wheel/tire combo. This might end up being the car that introduces us to Mercedes' rumored diesel-electric hybrid in 2011. For now, check out our mini gallery, then click over to see the rest of the photos and to read the interesting tale of how a spy photog goes about capturing something like this new Benz in the wild.

the front reminds me of the GS and the back looks like it is ripped off a bimmer with a added white stripe through the middle of it. i dont care how this looks, i would still rather take the GS or 5, just waiting for the new ones to come out.

looks like a Chrysler Sebring from the side...
NOT what you want from a Mercedes

This reminds me of a 2nd generation Infiniti Q.

Good car and looks like a bigger C-Class, so nothing fabulous.
I'd pocket the difference and spend much less for a new Honda Accord rather than buy an E-Class.
Mercedes holds no attraction for me because of the extent to which it ruined Chrysler. If I wanted an overpriced German car, I'd buy a BMW instead.

Totally agree, that's what it looks like to me too. Not really into the new C-Class look either.

How did they ruin Chrysler? God..state the facts. Daimler-Benz AG bought a burning sinking ship. They put out the flames, got some of the water out with the LX platform and the gear supplied directly from Daimler-Benz from the W210 E-class. Daimler still supplies the diesel engines for them. That went on to have billions of dollars in sales. But..Chrysler could not do anything for themselves with the rest of the line up. Daimler did not prevent Chrysler from developing products, they did give them old parts that worked well to put in their new designs, but it wasn't the violent and destructive overthrow that you and others seem to believe it was. It was more along the lines of "Let's take over and make them better by giving them technology that will vastly improve their image." F.ck it, it doesn't matter. While you're at it making up stupid things, tell yourself that Infiniti is a serious luxury brand, that Ford will be around in 5 years, that the economy is in pretty good shape, and that GW is a great president.

Well, GW is better than either Charlatan, Al Gore or Hippie, John Kerry would be IMO, but that's another subject.
The joining of Chrysler with Mercedes (DCX) was supposed to be a "merger of equals" or some other nonsense, but Mercedes was running the show.
I think Mercedes was a lousy parent to Chrysler for at least two good reasons: Sebring and Avenger. How the Mercedes guys could look at those 2 jokes and think they'd be high-volume competition to Camry and Accord takes quite a leap. Ugly styling and mediocre Mitsubishi underpinnings relegated these POS to rental car fleets and little more.
The Dodge Caliber is apparently substandard when compared with other compacts--even the 8 year old PT Cruiser which was designed by the "old" Chrysler Corp. is probably a better car.
The only Mercedes-designed Chrysler car that was a hit is the Chrysler 300C--certainly a good car while the bloom was on that rose. But after nearly 10 years, it's hard to believe that Mercedes could produce only one, really important car. Too bad.

iQuack you forgot the Dodge Charger, which did very well by the looks of it.
And Chrysler would have destroyed itself anyway regardless of Daimler AG input or not. Even though things are really bad now, they would have been much worse without Daimler considering Chrysler's earlier offerings.
And if you see a C-Class in person it undoubtedly looks much better than in the pictures. I guess not everyone can get behind the new styling, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Anyone else see an awful lot of Accord?

I wonder what photogs get paid for shots like these. That must be a rush to get an opportunity for pics.

Looks decent to me... I'm just hoping they bring the E400CDI or its' successor over here this time.

That side profile looks pretty sharp.
The roofline and tail kind of remind me of the Malibu (at least from the side).
Looks so much better than the C.

*yawn*
It's pretty bad when a car can make a Buick look dashing!

Another step towards the sharp polarizing designs that Mercedes brought us in the 80's.
Now if only there could be a return to the rock solid reliability (in comparison to now at least) of the 80's lineup.

I'm really not going to judge anything until I see the camo off.
