Spy Shots: Ford F-150's 4.4L diesel exposed
The Internet got a sneak peek at the new 4.4L Ford diesel engine last April when somebody snapped a pic of the complete package sitting on the floor at Ford's national dealer conference. Now, thanks to some eagle-eyed sharp shooters, we can see the new oil-burning mill in its natural habitat under the hood of a Ford F-150. Sure, there's lots of black plastic covering all the good stuff, but we can get a glimpse of all the assorted plumbing that will make this engine squeaky clean. We can also have a good shot of the intercooler, peaking out between the grille and the radiator. This engine is labeled as a Power Stroke, Ford's long-running moniker for the diesels equipped in its Super Duty trucks. For years, those mills have been made by Navistar, but after the fallout between the automaker and the supplier, Ford is now using a derivative of the diesel from Land Rover in Europe, though the 4.4L iteration will be made in Mexico for the North American market. Offering 20-percent more fuel economy than the 5.4L gas-powered Triton, along with a considerable bump in power, this could be one very important addition for the Ford Motor Company and will likely make its official debut at next year's Chicago Auto Show.

Sounds like a nut loose behind the steering wheel to me. I have owned all 3 trucks and frankly, there is very little difference between them all. Forgive me, I find brand haters as just silly. I actually just lost IQ points reading your silly post. You got a couple lemons, maybe made modifications, skipped routine service or did not see\ignored problems coming. Theres a pile of reasons for this, none of which fall user "Ford sucks".

Nevermind that nearly every authority out there now recognizes Ford makes some of the most reliable cars in the United States. Nevermind that even Consumer Reports rates all but 3 cars and trucks in the entire Ford Motor Company unreliable. No, Fords are still completely unreliable and nobody should buy them. A Chrysler built Ram is far more reliable. I'm a Subaru driver and I cannot get over how freaking delusional you are.
Mark 3:50PM (7/25/2008)
Correcting myself a bit, I meant "all but 3 cars in the entire Ford Motor Company are reliable."
Blake 2:07PM (7/23/2008)
What an idiot. I've had tons of Fords and I can't understand why there are retards like you out there that constantly bash them when they always seem to be very reliable for me and everyone else I know that owns them. Furthermore, I can't believe you can call Fords trash then talk up GM or Dodge. What a joke.
You are a fanboy, look at your avatar, it sums it all up.

You sound so mature and intelligent and informed.
TKOsoccer03 3:13PM (7/23/2008)
I'm in agreement with the Greek man .. all are equally as reliable. Except, the Ram has always had transmission problems, which could be the primary reason why it doesn't sell as many units.
Look.. the F150 is obviously America's favorite truck. Is it the best? I think so .. overall, it's just a more solid truck. Is it more reliable than a Chevy? Probably not..

@ Everybody Give it a rest and live up the the reality That Ford Sucks... now stop replaying to this post cause all you guys don't know anything as a said 99-06 thats a lot of cars so it proves my Hardcore Fact... now im not a fanboy i just hate ford for the reason i stated...
Andrew L 4:31PM (7/23/2008)
99-06?
I own a 99 Mercury Sable LS with 116,000 miles on the odometer equipped with a Duratec 30 and still have the original Engine and Transmission... oh yea that really sucks
Randall Prince 11:10PM (7/23/2008)
Ford F-150 is the best selling pickup in the US and has been for a very long time. There's a reason for that. Their cars may be pretty crappy, but their trucks are built to last.

But with diesel fuel costing 20% more than gas, it's a wash.

no kidding. This diesel circle jerk is getting old. Does someone think that diesel prices are going to magically come down less than gas?
Jason the G 1:55PM (7/23/2008)
20% is nothing - my 5.4 gets 18 mpg regularly. So, 21-22 mpg from the new plant? They were talking about 28-30 when they first announced it. Color me unimpressed.
mooseman 1:53PM (7/23/2008)
Unless you get your diesel from behind a restaurant for free.
Sam 2:05PM (7/23/2008)
Or purchase home heating fuel diesel which is taxed at a lower rate, identical except for the added dye and lower price...shhhh.
Jared 2:06PM (7/23/2008)
Yup, unfortunately that is true. And worse, the diesel engine is undoubtedly significantly more expensive than the gas engine. It is too bad. I'm a big fan of diesel, but the fuel price differential has sucked the economic life out of diesel engines in the US.
